About this listen

Audiobook five of the Ciaphas Cain series

On Periremunda, the populace are rioting. With local forces unable to contain the widespread civil disorder, Commissar Cain and his regiment of Valhallans are called in to help....

Listen to it because:

An unruly populace, enemies at work behind the scenes, and the presence of an inquisitor (the one who puts the footnotes in the Cain Archives no less!) - it all adds up to trouble for Cain, doesn't it? And fun, of course.

The story:

On Periremunda, the populace are rioting. With local forces unable to contain the widespread civil disorder, Commissar Cain and his regiment of Valhallans are called in to help. However, it seems there is more to the rebellion than first appeared, and Cain suspects sinister forces at work behind the scenes. When the commissar is reunited with Inquisitor Amberley Vail, it seems his fears are realised. In this the fifth book in the popular Ciaphas Cain series, our hero is thrown into a deadly conspiracy that even he might not be able to emerge from alive.

Written by Sandy Mitchell. Narrated by Stephen Perring, Penelope Rawlins, Emma Gregory, Richard Reed, Tara Rawson and Andrew James Spooner.

Duty done well

Mitchell has an incredible flair for writing humorous books, but this book was simply saturated with well written punchlines. I enjoyed every Cain novel thus far, but this one reserved a special spot in my heart.

As always, another book over too soon

Absolutely smashed this book in two days, and, as always with this series, enraptured the whole time.

Cain

It’s a Cain novel, if that’s your thing it’s great- delightfully pulpy and as humorous as you’re likely to find in the 41st millennium

better than normal!

The commissar's adventures are always good, but this one has more levels, attaches to more other stories, and really is well worth the time.

My favourite narrator for the commissar is Toby Longworth, but since that seems unlikely any longer, the team that has been doing the job since always earns a 4 or 5 star review from me.

Only occasionally does a narrator not respond with what the author says is the way a character spoke. (ie. "Gadzooks", Tom grumbled quietly. But the narrator says it loudly)

in the grim darkness there is Ciaphus Cain

excellent performance and fantastic writing. a great balance between the horror of the grim darkness and the humor of the guardsmen living in it. after reading quite a few of the ciaphus Cain series they do begin to get a bit "samey" both in subject matter, delivery, and story lines. they are no less enjoyable for their predictability.

More of the usual

The voice acting is still just as strong as the first book, the story feels slightly rehashed and similar from the first few novels. If you like the first four books you will definitely enjoy this one
