About this listen
Unlike your predecessors, it’s now possible to retire from a long and successful career as a strength and conditioning coach, personal trainer or group fitness instructor. These professions have earned the respect of other fields and are now collectively considered a legitimate career path. Being a trainer or coach is no longer viewed as just a hobby.
With all of the available training information, you’d think there’d be more about the how-tos of coaching. There are countless books on theory, access to thousands of research papers and you can attend a continuing education event every weekend, but who’s teaching you how to be a coach?
Coaching Rules covers the six biggest obstacles you’ll face when pursuing success in the strength and fitness profession: complacency, egotism, poor communication, lack of connection, overcomplication and client attrition.
To a young coach, this book will be a sturdy platform to begin your new career. The seasoned coach will find subtle reminders, fresh perspectives and reassurance that you’re not alone.

Imagine this (go ahead, it's an easy one): You're bored with your workouts. Nothing's changing; you're not getting stronger or leaner or feeling better, and, heck, maybe you'll just take a layoff and see what happens. You know what happens. That two-week layoff lasts a year, that's what happens! Now consider this: Traffic was light and you're 15 minutes early for your dental cleaning appointment. You flip open your device and bring up your new copy of Before We Go. By the time the dental tech calls you, you've heard two chapters and are amped to get to the gym. Your mind is racing through the appointment, and it's all you can do to stay in that squeaky lounge chair.

Joining a boxing gym is intimidating for beginners. I was once very lazy; I lacked discipline and was generally scared to try anything that looked difficult. You most likely find yourself in that position, but enough is enough; it is time to improve yourself.

Story
CrossFit trainer Ben Bergeron has helped build the world's fittest athletes, but he's not like other coaches. He believes that greatness is not for the elite few; that winning is a result, not a goal; and that character, not talent, is what makes a true champion. His powerful philosophy can help anyone excel at all aspects of life. Using the dramatic competition between the top contenders at the 2016 Reebok CrossFit Games® as a background, Ben explores the step-by-step process of achieving excellence and the unique set of positive character traits necessary for leveling up to world-class. The mindset and methodology that have produced some of the greatest athletes in the world's most grueling sport can work equally well for golfers, lawyers, artists, entrepreneurs - anyone who's willing to commit totally to becoming better than the best.

What’s the number one thing stopping you from playing your best tennis? Ian Westermann, founder of the world’s #1 online tennis instruction portal, Essentialtennis.com, will confidently say it’s an obstacle you probably never thought of: The ball. The whole point of tennis is to hit the ball over the net and in, so how can the ball be the thing that’s standing in the way? In fact, this is why the ball is such an impediment: your desire to hit a good shot, with the right mix of power and spin, to a specific spot on the court, prevents you from striking the ball the way you should.

Trainer/Strength Coach Bible
Brendon has made such a positive impact on my career as a personal trainer. I had already been a personal trainer for a decade when I met Brendon. I thought I knew it all but it turns out I knew almost nothing. Since meeting Brendon I feel like I have digested decades of knowledge in only a few short years. A lot of the knowledge he taught me is boiled down and streamlined in this book. I wish I had this book when I first started my career. This is a must for any new trainer or strength coach. It’s also a must for anyone that has been in the business for sometime and thinks they know it all, like I did. If you want to level up in the fitness industry, LISTEN TO THIS BOOK.

Excellent Read for All Coaches
Just finished Coaching Rules by Brendon Rearick. Really well done.
I've been coaching youth sports for 21 years and regret I hadn't read (or listened to, as it may be) more books about coaching before the last few years. I now find myself more prepared, deliberate and thoughtful. That is the main reason I wanted to read this book. Not to become a strength coach but I hoped that most of the book would apply to all types of coaching and it didn't disappoint. As a pleasant unexpected outcome, I found myself with a deeper understanding of my MBSC experiences and relationships over the years since I started training there with a young enthusiastic strength coach Brendon Rearick.
Brendon has prepared this book in such an organized and articulate manner. It includes many great thoughts, rules, & quotes with the explanations behind them and ways to implement them in your coaching. I think this book would be an asset to any coach looking to further their methods, techniques and toolbox.

Phenomenal read
I received a copy of this Audio book through a contest on Twitter. Super happy I was able to win! The book was a phenomenal read. Very easy to follow along and apply every day. Being a trainer is more than just exercises. It’s about being a great person that the client will enjoy being around. Great job Brendon! And kudos to everyone at MBSC!

A FITNESS COACH MUST READ❗️
I have been in the fitness industry since 2005 and over those many years have put together a list of books and articles that I re-read annually. Some even biannually. This book is definitely going in there. This book should be required reading during ever CPT and all other movements certification programs! Brendon, thank you! -Coach Dwayne Walter, CPT, BCS, Pn1
