About this listen
Learn how to value your own opinion over those of others. Codependency books are perfect for those of us who live as if what other people think matters more than what we think. This thinking leads to constantly trying to please or even to change others. Codependent behaviors can have negative effects on us and those around us, even leading to a dysfunctional family. It can be difficult to say no to those we love.
A codependency book on improving your life through boundaries and peace. Karen Casey, best-selling author of Let Go Now and Each Day a New Beginning, has had her own experience with codependent behavior, and she is here to share what she has learned along the way. Through her own stories and the stories of those she has met through Al Anon meetings and elsewhere, she shows you how to detach from unhealthy codependency, create more positive relationships and, ultimately, lead a less stressful life.
Inside, you'll learn how to:
- Recognize and acknowledge your own attachments and codependency
- Set boundaries, find peace, and engage in healthy detachment
- Nurture positive relationships with the people in your life - both new and old

Response vs. reaction. To be frank, mindset is everything. We cannot change a person. We often cannot change a situation. We can change how we respond. We can learn to use positive words and act out of our hearts rather than react with hurt or anger. When we stop focusing on problems solutions tend to appear. Happy mind, happy life. If we change how we respond to external stimuli, our mindset follows. Organized around 12 very simple steps, this book gives listeners the tools to find a positive, peaceful response to every curveball life throws at us.

Trauma is a fact of life. Veterans and their families deal with the painful aftermath of combat; one in five Americans has been molested; one in four grew up with alcoholics; one in three couples have engaged in physical violence. Dr. Bessel van der Kolk, one of the world’s foremost experts on trauma, has spent more than three decades working with survivors. In The Body Keeps the Score, he uses recent scientific advances to show how trauma literally reshapes both body and brain, compromising sufferers’ capacities for pleasure, engagement, self-control, and trust.

If we produce these emotions, it falls within our power to stop them. But we have to understand our part in them far better than we do, and that is what this remarkable book teaches.

Advert for Al-anon
This book is basically just recommending that everyone join Al-anon. it tells other people's stories of success and that they used al-anon to heal and learn important principles in healing. I think it is great that all the success stories are doing better. I was more interested in a slef-help book than a 4+ hour advertisement for al-anon.

Not impressed
Based on the great reviews, I was genuinely disappointed. It was more focused on telling the stories of people who were alcoholics or related to/partners of alcoholics (each chapter was a persons story) instead of practical tips to incorporate in your life to practice detachment.
