About this listen

Revised and Updated, with a New Chapter on Trauma and Anxiety, a List of Resources, and More

Over 7 Million Copies Sold

A cultural phenomenon that has helped heal millions of readers, this modern classic holds the key to understanding codependency and unlocking its hold on your life.

As heard on Glennon Doyle’s We Can Do Hard Things podcast.

Melody Beattie’s compassionate and insightful look into codependency—the concept of losing oneself in the name of helping another—has guided millions of readers toward the understanding that they are powerless to change anyone but themselves and that caring for the self is where healing begins.

Is someone else's problem your problem? If, like so many others, you've lost sight of your own life in the drama of tending to a loved one’s self-destructive behavior, you may be codependent––and you may find yourself in this book. With personal reflections, exercises, and instructive stories drawn from Beattie’s own life and the lives of those she’s counseled, Codependent No More helps you break old patterns and maintain healthy boundaries and offers a clear and achievable path to healing, hope, freedom, and happiness.

This revised edition includes an all-new chapter on trauma and anxiety—subjects Beattie has long felt necessary to address within the context of codependency—making it even more relevant today than it was when it first entered the national conversation over 35 years ago.

Editorial Review

Start here to build better boundaries
The 1986 classic Codependent No More by Melody Beattie has a special place in my library. To me, it’s a quintessential well-being title for anyone who struggles with putting themselves first. My first copy was passed down to me nearly half a decade ago by a close friend who raved about how it had helped her establish healthy boundaries with her loved ones—just what I needed at the time. While conversations about the validity of the term "codependent" have emerged since the Reagan administration, I still include myself among the countless readers and listeners who have successfully used Beattie’s techniques for prioritizing self-care to jumpstart healing. I’m most looking forward to a brand new chapter on trauma recovery in this modern recording of a legendary self-help book. — Rachael X.

Great Content, Questionable Editing

This is a wonderful book for self reflection, an in depth look at codependency in its various colors. I enjoyed it very much, but the editing can be a little jarring as the voices are not cohesive…tones are off, and they don’t flow easily from one to the other, I felt it was very noticeable. Still, I don’t regret purchasing it!

Life-Changing

I am so glad I found this book. It is exactly what I needed. I just finished it and fully expect to listen to it again. It is the first time I have ever heard anyone speak from what I will call my perspective. It is life-changing to have finally felt someone else understood my perspective and to see the absolute necessity to focus on myself and my healing.

Tough but good

The book we all should read to address our own patterns and behaviors. There are places you won’t relate, places you’ll think “oops, that’s me” and places that feel like cold water to the face as you recognize yourself.

Exceptional and highly recommended

This book was recommended by my therapist since my mother is an alcoholic. I wish I read it years earlier. I will be rereading it.

Great book please read

Thank you. I’m enlightened to my own issues of codependency and am seeking help. This book really helped me understand the why’s and how’s of what I’ve been through and puts a lot of codependent issues and behaviors into context. It’s a hard reality but I’m glad I am not alone.
