About this listen

Revised and Updated, with a New Chapter on Trauma and Anxiety, a List of Resources, and More

Over 7 Million Copies Sold

A cultural phenomenon that has helped heal millions of readers, this modern classic holds the key to understanding codependency and unlocking its hold on your life.

As heard on Glennon Doyle’s We Can Do Hard Things podcast.

Melody Beattie’s compassionate and insightful look into codependency—the concept of losing oneself in the name of helping another—has guided millions of readers toward the understanding that they are powerless to change anyone but themselves and that caring for the self is where healing begins.

Is someone else's problem your problem? If, like so many others, you've lost sight of your own life in the drama of tending to a loved one’s self-destructive behavior, you may be codependent––and you may find yourself in this book. With personal reflections, exercises, and instructive stories drawn from Beattie’s own life and the lives of those she’s counseled, Codependent No More helps you break old patterns and maintain healthy boundaries and offers a clear and achievable path to healing, hope, freedom, and happiness.

This revised edition includes an all-new chapter on trauma and anxiety—subjects Beattie has long felt necessary to address within the context of codependency—making it even more relevant today than it was when it first entered the national conversation over 35 years ago.

Editorial Review

Start here to build better boundaries
The 1986 classic Codependent No More by Melody Beattie has a special place in my library. To me, it’s a quintessential well-being title for anyone who struggles with putting themselves first. My first copy was passed down to me nearly half a decade ago by a close friend who raved about how it had helped her establish healthy boundaries with her loved ones—just what I needed at the time. While conversations about the validity of the term "codependent" have emerged since the Reagan administration, I still include myself among the countless readers and listeners who have successfully used Beattie’s techniques for prioritizing self-care to jumpstart healing. I’m most looking forward to a brand new chapter on trauma recovery in this modern recording of a legendary self-help book. — Rachael X.

I was driving in the car on the road to nowhere when I found the book tucked away in my audibles library. I listened to it because I didn’t know what else to do. I loved this book--it was just what I needed at this time. If someone would have told me I was codependent, I would not have believed them. As I listened to this book I identified with many of the characteristics she described. i am grateful for this awareness so I can change and improve. I can see how this will benefit me as an individual, and in any type of relationship.

Great tool for taking control of my life.

I recommend this book to anyone who is struggling in any relationship (family or love) or has been out of a romantic relationship for any length of time. This book helped me better understand where many of my “default” behaviors stem from, how those behaviors are not set in stone, why my past choices have not been good for me, and what I can do to break my own destructive cycles. I cannot emphasize enough how much value this book has! Wow.

Life changing clarity

Absolutely loved the talk about attachment versus detachment. Attachment (obsessively attached to the persons situation)… we become so attached to something or someone else that we become detached from ourselves, and lose a lot of our capacity/ability/power. Love the concept of not being blown about by every wind, which reminds me about loving God and loving others with the appropriate boundaries and realizing that I cannot and shall not be everything for everyone especially one that could put a deficit in my relationship with my wife. This is such a great read to build awareness and use the tools Melody Beattie presents

This was incredibly helpful and eye opening for me, personally. My therapist recommended it and at first I didn’t see why, but after listening to the whole book - I get it. He was onto something. I’m appreciative to the author for outlining this the way she did because it was clear enough for me to understand.

My therapist recommended this book over a year ago. Once you read this book, you won’t be able to un-see your own codependent behavior, or that of others. It helped me see the benefit in establishing healthy boundaries with others, and how there is hope for the future, whether you are with or without the ones that you are codependent on.

Melody Beattie hits on every point of addiction. Every aspect of healing. I believe if you have never been through an experience as a victim or abuser, the concepts of healing would be difficult for anyone to understand. Beautifully written and heart felt. An inspiration for hope. It takes work, dedication, patience and compassion to learn to love yourself enough to leave an abusive atmosphere. Even if you are the cause. I recommend this book for anyone who has ever experienced trauma. You are not alone.
