In the end, everyone must pay for their sins.

Trial after trial, Nevaeh's loved ones have struggled to save her from a dark destiny. The time has finally come for her to return home and join the Earth-bound angels in a war threatening to destroy the human race.

Is it really Nev who's walking the earthly plane, though?

True, being surrounded by evil for weeks on end would change anyone, but Nev's friends suspect something is wrong with the Nevaeh they've extracted from hell's grip.

Archard, Arkin, Maggie, and Malach prepare to fight the impending apocalypse brought on by the rebellious Dominions, while trying to accept the new Nevaeh and help her gain control over her powers.

Will Nevaeh be able to save the world, or will she make everyone pay with their lives?

The Conclusion You've Been Waiting For

This is the third and final book in the Faltering Souls series and it picks up right where book 2 ended. I didn't feel like there was any kind of gap, I just rolled right into it, so my advice is to make sure you have all 3 books and just keep right on going through them. Paranormal of any kind is not my usual go to genre but every once in a while, I like to break it up and listen to something different and am so glad I took a chance on this series. Haven is an amazing writer and brings all of these characters and these different "worlds" to life so vividly you feel like you are there watching everything unfold and experiencing it all right along with them. I have held Nevaeh close to my heart since the first book as there was something about her that just made me love her and want only good things for her. She goes through so many ups and downs in this series and this book amps it up even more while she's trying to decide what is right and what is wrong and what to do. So many characters battle this question in this series, but I feel this final book really puts it all to the test! I was very pleased with how it ended and what Nevaeh ultimately decided for herself as well as every body else. Vanessa does an excellent job once again of putting feeling and emotion into this story and really bringing all the characters to life, but especially Nevaeh.

4.5 stars

Contrition is the third and final book of the Faltering Souls series. This book is told in multiple POV for several of the characters. This audiobook is much shorter than the others from the series but jam packed with action and emotion. Mini spoiler alert- I cried...like actual tears cried at one part and teared up at another. It is rare for books to make me actually cry so I love it when it happens.

This book picks up right where book two ended, just as book two started right where book one had ended. These books do not standalone. You must start with book 1 and go from there.

In Contrition, we see Nev, or at least Nev's body full of souls that she consumed, in a struggle to save the world or damn it completely. At the end of book 2, Severance, we saw Rhett trick Nev into consuming his soul so he could escape hell, and since he is so powerful, it is unknown which soul, Nev's or Rhett's, will assume control of Nev's body and all of her powers.

There are a lot of twists and turns and even the readers are left to wonder what is going to happen. And maybe it is just me, but I definitely was not expecting it to end the way it did. It was definitely a surprise. Whether it be a good or a bad surprise though, is up to you to determine. No spoilers from me.

Overall, I really enjoyed this series. This series was the first time that I have read this author and I will definitely read more from her in the future. I recommend this series. It is captivating and spans multiple sub-genres so we get a bit of a lot of things, such as mystery, suspense, horror, small amount of romance, and the obvious- Urban Fantasy. Even though this series discusses religion heavily, it is mostly done in a way that even non-believers will enjoy the story because it isn't preachy. The only exception to that was one chapter in Contrition where it stepped over from toeing the line and did feel a bit preachy for a moment there. But besides that, it is totally enjoyable for the fiction that it is.

As for the narration, the second and third books share the same narrator but the first book has a different narrator. I have to say that the narrator of Falter, book 1, knocked it out of the park. She was incredible. The narrator of Severance and Contrition was good but I struggled with her voices for Archard and Gavyn when she was doing straight narration for their POVs. She used almost the same voice as she used for Nevaeh and I occasionally had to stop to figure out whose POV it was. When it was all dialogue with each other, it was totally fine.

gut wrenching is right!

So... this was an awesome finale to a trilogy, fraught with peril and soul searching. Great story that also managed to make me question my own morality. As a debut, this was more than admirable. This was awesome! At times, I both loved and hated Nevaeh. This is the hallmark of a truly great author. Making your readers and listeners feel conflicted. Great narrator choice, too.

Holy Epilogue!

It was a good finale book to the series but, the epilogue was the best! Thank you for sharing your first love with us Haven!!! She has won a place in my heart as well!! Trilogies and series are my favorites and if I can’t make past the first few chapters of book one there’s no way I can make it through all the other books. This one did not disappoint! It grabs you and you need more until the epilogue and it finishes beautifully!!

I was given this book for my honest and unbiased review.

A fitting ending.

Cage created a dark and twisted story of heaven, hell, sacrifice, love, family, and so much more in the Faltering Souls Trilogy. In the final book, Contrition, There is no happy ending in the battle of good versus evil. Lives are lost. Love is sacrificed. But the end is just and fitting for the story.

The Narrator, Vanessa Vasquez, had a daunting range of characters in the final installment but she lent a unique and perfect voice to each.

Epic conclusion

I am kind of sad while sitting here writing this review. I have followed Nev down her path, from innocent young girl, striving to survive with George day to day. Then to discovering she isn’t just a normal everyday human, she is much more. Watching her struggle with the beast inside and her determination, her mission, her accomplishments, failures, and strength.
Now we have reached the finale, the conclusion, Nev’s final epic battle, with herself, her beast, others wishing to harm her, her friends, family, and the world. Nev has some huge decisions to make, I was proud of her.
I also want to add, at the end of this story the author left a note. I have to agree with her assessment of right, wrong and occasionally we all need to search our souls.
Vanessa Vasquez again did a fantastic job narrating, and bringing these characters to life.
Thanks Haven for allowing me to listen and Nev will always be tucked in my heart.
