Publisher's summary

Bloomsbury presents Crown of Midnight by Sarah J. Maas, read by Elizabeth Evans.

‘One of the best fantasy book series of the past decade’ TIME

Never trust an assassin.

Celaena’s story continues in this second book in the #1 bestselling Throne of Glass series by Sarah J. Maas.

Celaena Sardothien won a brutal contest to become the King’s Champion. But she is far from loyal to the crown. Though she goes to great lengths to hide her secret, her deadly charade becomes more difficult when she realises she is not the only one seeking justice. Her search for answers ensnares those closest to her, and no one is safe from suspicion — not the Crown Prince Dorian; not Chaol, the Captain of the Guard; not even her best friend, Nehemia, a princess with a rebel heart.

Then, one terrible night, the secrets they have all been keeping lead to an unspeakable tragedy. As Celaena’s world shatters, she will be forced to decide once and for all where her true loyalties lie ... and what she is willing to fight for.

The second book in the #1 New York Times bestselling Throne of Glass series returns readers to a land destroyed by liars, where one woman’s truth is the only thing that can save them all.

Wow it’s starting to heat up

After reading the ACOTAR series I found it hard to initially get into TOG since I started it a day after finishing ACOTAR and it just felt like it couldn’t compare, but after finishing the first book and then this book I’m hooked - super different to ACOTAR but still same style of writing and brilliant female character. Sometimes hard to separate the different regions since they all have strange names I think it might be clearer if you were reading vs listening or maybe I’m just dumb lmao but it’s worth sticking to the series what an ending!!!

Immersive

The story is well told, the with a complex world laid out simply. The narration immersive and characterisation is subtle and clear without being over the top.

What a cliffhanger!!!

This was such a good read. I don’t want to give a 5 just yet as I’ve heard it gets better. And there is no option for a 6 haha

Much better

I was on edge and irritated in some of the chapters but it’s way better than the first book.

Perfect mix of romance, adventure, magic and plot twists

Wow… The plot twist in the end was amazing. II was sobbing realising why Celaena had to choose her responsibility over happiness. I loved Chaol, he is such a good man, protective and caring. I am interested to see how he finds his happy ending. I loved how complex characters were and how in the end of the book all pieces of the story came together. I might love this series more than ACOTAR. I bought all the books because I loved all the characters so much.

frustrating how the good guys couldnn't seem to trust one another and unite

I can respect that the author SJM became much better later. Personaly I didn't enjoy the constant feeling of knowing more about the evil guys than the main characters did, it felt like screaming "he's right behind you!". I prefer heroines that ask for help amd accept it

For all of TOG.

just no.
characters are remarkably annoying. plot stretched way too much. got to 4th book. and just stoped. at times just forwarded the audiobook and did not seem to miss anything.

Good listen but don't like the main character.

The main protagonist, Celaena Sardothien, can be challenging to empathize with. Her intense anger towards a male character for keeping a secret feels unreasonable, especially considering her own propensity for secrecy. the overall fantasy world created makes the book a decent read for those who like fantasy mixed with magic.
