About this listen
Hatred and fear between the machine-power people of the Dark and the magic-wielding people of the Day have kept at the edge of war for centuries. The delicate balance is about to be lost when a young, sickly boy discovers a secret that sets the forces of Dark and Day racing to secure a devastating power that could control the sun itself! Join Jono Wyer as he is thrust into the center of the prophecy, politics, and prejudice that threaten to tear the world apart. Jono must learn to trust new strange friends and doubt what he was raised to believe if the world is going to survive truth that lurks below the fears of the other....

Arthur lives with his father, a fallen but proud former noble, in Border Village #49, along with the other good folks condemned to toil in service to the Baron. After dying and being reborn into a world that's built like a video game, Jim has found himself stuck in a very old-world style new-player zone for low-level adventurers. Unfortunately, the zone fell out of use centuries ago, and no one told the monsters they were supposed to take it easy on the Noobs. Even worse, the only new player around is Jim. Jim has been given an opportunity, and he'll do his best to take advantage of it.

You define life or it defines you. In Shawn Speakman’s case, it was both. Lacking health insurance and diagnosed with Hodgkin’s lymphoma in 2011, Shawn quickly accrued a massive medical debt that he did not have the ability to pay. That’s when New York Times best-selling author Terry Brooks offered to donate a short story that Shawn could sell to help alleviate those bills—and suggested he ask the same of his other writer friends. Unfettered is the result: An anthology built in order to relieve that debt, featuring short stories by some of the best fantasy writers in the genre.

On the night Gray might finally die in his nightmares, he is saved by the kind and mysterious Professor Helmith, a powerful arcanist. She offers to protect Gray and invites him to attend Astra Academy.

This book caught me by surprise!
I started listening to this book without any predisposition, both the author and the narrator were unknown to me and based on the little feedback I had come across I was somewhat afraid it might be a children’s book. Halfway thru the book I’m glad I gave it a shot! I read somewhere it was Harry Potter meets Star Wars, however personally I feel it’s closer to lord of the rings steampunk, most importantly I find the book very entertaining and I recommend it for new listeners.

Jono is likable character
The story is nice, the character development is done nice, Jono at times seems like Percy Jackson, just like Percy Jackson will like to see more parts of this audiobook.

Fantastic world building and excellent performance
When I first recommended this book, I was a bit worried the story could really be geared to only younger readers. Thankfully this was not the case. The author does an excellent job of showing us the world, one that easily feels real. Main characters are well developed too. The story is fairly straightforward but well done. We learn about and understand these characters enough to care about what happens to them and the rest of this world. One small struggle for me was how long the build up for the climax was. When a clear and simple solution for a problem is the very thing a major character focused on for half a book but that character is like "I feel so helpless but what could I do?", it had me grumbling back to "Come on, just ......". However, even that frustration showed me I was invested in the story. Certainly recommended.
Loved the narrator's performance. Good pacing, smooth experience, and a good range of voices to know who is speaking. Performance adds to the experience.
I was given a free review copy of this audiobook at my request and have voluntarily left this honest review.

Good first book
Full disclosure: I received this book for free in exchange for an honest review.
This book is mainly focused on Jono and his struggles. He was born with poor health and has only one path available for him if he wants to live a long life. Which is to get accepted into an acclaimed school, but said school is very strict on who is admitted. There are chapters about classes and its interesting. This is where I can see the similarities between Harry Potter other reviewers have noted. However, I was hoping for more about the classes as this is a pivotal point, this education is what will allow him to have prestige.
We also find out that there are two factions Dark & Day, with a lot of friction between them.
SPOILER
The issue that bothered me was during the great conflict and how it was resolved. Two sides hated each other and have for a long time. They finally clash, but then immediately stop due to a plot point, even though they were destroying each other moments before. I understand the book is more young adult, but was hoping for a little more in the explanation there.
END SPOILER
Overall, it was an enjoyable listen to hear about Jono and his adventures.
The narrator did a good job adding another dimension to the book. I would have liked a little more variation between the voices.
