It could be worse. You could be stuck with a literal shoulder demon.
After dying and being reborn into a world that's built like a video game, Jim has found himself stuck in a very old-world style new-player zone for low-level adventurers. Unfortunately, the zone fell out of use centuries ago, and no one told the monsters they were supposed to take it easy on the Noobs. Even worse, the only new player around is Jim.
Jim has been given an opportunity, and he'll do his best to take advantage of it.

The narrator (Johnathan McClain) has this little extra that even makes the normal tedious character sheath really funny and amusing to listen to, absolutely a brilliant narrator.
The books is an interesting but not very different version of wake up in a rpg-world, mc starts as a noob etc. A clever thing is an annoying and very funny side character that has it´s place and makes the story flow and is a target for much joy. My thoughts goes to a certain beer can in another book series, being an asshole seem to be a good recipe for humor.
All in all, a really good book that made me promptly go buy book two in the series. There is no real, evil cliffhanger in the end so I guess it´s ok to just read this one and come back later. The books is in all regards very satisfying, I really recommend it.
Surprisingly good book

I'm a HUGE LITRPG fan. I've read...well, a lot of these books. Enough to know the established tropes and have gained my share of pet-peeves from reused jokes. In my typical fashion, I'm just going to pro/con this out:
PROS
* The MC is on another world after having his soul intercepted after he died on earth. This isn't a spoiler. You find this out very early in the book. I say this to make the point that too often LITRPG's have an MC who ends up in a new world and is completely okay with everything. This isn't the case. Many things the MC encounters reminds him of his family. He gets reminiscent enough for the reader to know that he hasn't forgotten where he came from, who he left, or even really given up hope that maybe he might be able to get back to them..
* The game system is vast and has a great amount of depth to it. You can tell the author put a lot of work into the system without making all the details too overbearing.
* The interplay between the MC and Shart.
* Name jokes. At least the first 5 times, it's funny. After that, it does get old.
* The MC, even though he's constantly harassed by Shart, isn't an idiot. I don't know what the deal with dumb MC's is as it's quite common in LITRPG, but it's good to see an MC with some smarts. ... most of the time. Feckin puma forest...but that's book 2.
CONS
* Name jokes...from #5 onwards.
* Sharts constant 'You dumb dumb!' lines. Granted, this kind of goes both ways because some times it is funny.
A hilarious bit of LITRPG and play on words
