Publisher's summary

An isolated highway in the middle of the desert - the perfect place to hide a secret.

LA-based artist Laurie Simmonds disappeared two months ago, her camper van abandoned on the isolated Twentynine Palms Highway, miles from anything - or anyone. With the police investigation stalled, her parents put all their faith in private investigator Jessica Shaw to find out the truth of what happened.

Jessica and her partner Matt Connor discover that two other women are missing, their disappearances connected to the same highway. When a link emerges between these women and a group of former college friends, Jessica feels certain they’re closing in on their target.

But no sooner do they follow this up than Laurie’s parents get spooked and drop the case. Jessica is blindsided but determined not to give up: three women are missing, and many more may be at risk. She can’t turn her back on them. But the more she pulls at the threads of the truth, the closer she comes to danger. Can she find out who’s behind these crimes before they come for her?

Story really satisfies, highly recommend

This is the third Jessica Shaw mystery by Lisa Gray. Each of them stands completely on it’s own-in fact, I started with the second one and enjoyed it enough to go back for number one.
The story is more satisfying than the VAST majority of mysteries written in the last five years! One feels like a passenger riding along with Jessica, and thinking through her procedures. Lisa Gray does a good job of character development too. A couple figures appear in more than one book and it is interesting to see their points of view develop.
I’m looking forward to more books in this series and highly recommend them to people wanting more than a quick, cosy read.

You know what they say about karma...

PI Jessica Shaw is investigating the disappearance of a young woman when she notices a pattern...2 other women had disappeared from the same stretch of highway. As Jessica digs deeper, she uncovers a sad tale that dates back 30yrs ago and another woman who had disappeared, and whose remains had only recently been discovered. Your heart will hurt for a forgotten little boy. Can Jessica solve the mystery before it’s to late for another woman?
There is also the underlying chemistry between Jessica and her new boss...maybe an HEA in her future? Only time will tell...

KARMA IS A B****

This is a well written lesson in revenge, Proof that evil men will always put themselves first & I usually don't like the insanity defense, but, in this case I'd vote not guilty by reason of insanity. The ring leader of the whole mess (spoiled rich kid) was true to his creed- BLAME THE VICTIM ,NEVER ADMIT YOUR GUILT &EVEN FAMILY IS EXPENDABLE WHEN IT COMES TO COVERING YOUR OWN A**. While I felt sorry for the women, the men in their lives were totally responsible. All that running at the end was unnecessary. Jessica has a problem doing what needs to be done to protect herself. Why she even carries a gun is beyond me The twist at the end was interesting, makes you wonder!

Excellent series!

I'm also through listening to the third of the Jessica Shaw series and looking forward to the next one! I listened to the first one, Thin Air, and loved it and immediately bought #2, Bad Memory, and this one. I highly recommend this series and this author. The narrator is fabulous, the 3 stories don't have anything in common except some of the characters - the stories don't depend on each other so you can read one without the others. But you'll enjoy it and want to read the others.

The story was terrific

My only issue was that the narrator often seemed to be talking with her mouth stuffed with cotton. I had a very difficult time with it. She would go along fine for awhile then, there it would be and it was so difficult to listen.
Loved the ending.

Suspense

As the story progressed, the pieces started coming together. However, the numerous characters and their situations were jumbled in the first half of the book. The use of different people for the voices might have helped. Overall, the story was suspenseful and satisfying in the end.
