As Wewelsburg Castle burns, Eli carries Isaiah to safety. So much is lost, Malachi is gone, the Demon from Eli’s terrible past is reborn into the world already at war, and to make matters worse, Gideon is back. Yet, before Eli can even reach the sanctuary of his home, he learns a painful truth about Gideon, the truth of why he left him, and Eli can barely hold onto his own sanity. Eli quickly understands that not everything in life, or death, is black and white, and sometimes to protect the ones we love, we have to make the greatest sacrifice of all.

Did the story keep me engaged: yes
Was I invested in the characters: yes
Do the books in this series need to be listened to in order? in my opinion - yes
Story comment: At the time of this review (06/2020) I've listened to the four audio books available in this series back-to-back and hope the fifth is available soon.
This series is a very complex story interwoven with history, characters and events. I wouldn't call it an "easy listen", but it is both thought provoking and engaging. It does need to be listened to in order, I would be very lost if i jumped in in the middle.
Book 3 delves unapologetically into some of the darkest times in history and weaves a complicated story of biblical proportions. Well written characters with both depth and charisma have kept me engaged from start to finish.
Narrator comment: I enjoyed Stephen Van Doren's narration and think he has done a good job narrating this series. I had no problem distinguishing characters or feeling the tension, action, horror, humor, love ... you name it, the emotions are all in there somewhere ... of the story.
