About this listen
In his recovery from drugs and alcohol, Chris Grosso has stumbled, staggered, and started all over again. In an effort to understand why he relapses, and why many of us return to the myriad of other self-defeating behaviors despite our better judgment, he went to best-selling authors, spiritual teachers, psychologists, doctors, and more, and asked them why we tend to repeat mistakes in our lives, even when we know these actions will harm us and the ones we love.
In Dead Set on Living, Chris shares these intimate conversations and the practices that have taught him to be more loving, compassionate, and forgiving with himself as well as new meditation and healing techniques he learned through his journey.
Unabashedly honest and inspiring, Dead Set on Living is essential listening for anyone seeking a path towards triumph over adversity, understanding the human condition, and rebuilding relationships after promises have been broken.

Story
Step 1: You admit that you're powerless over your addiction. Now what? Twelve-step programs like Alcoholics Anonymous (AA) and Narcotics Anonymous (NA) have helped countless people on the path to recovery. But many still feel that 12-step programs aren't for them: that the spiritual emphasis is too narrow, the modality too old-school, the setting too triggering, or the space too exclusive. Some struggle with an addict label that can eclipse the histories, traumas, and experiences that feed into addiction, or dismisses the effects of adverse experiences like trauma in the first place.

As with many self-destructive kids, Noah Levine's search for meaning led him first to punk rock, drugs, drinking, and dissatisfaction. But the search didn't end there. Having clearly seen the uselessness of drugs and violence, Noah looked for positive ways to channel his rebellion against what he saw as the lies of society. Fueled by his anger at so much injustice and suffering, Levine now uses that energy and the practice of Buddhism to awaken his natural wisdom and compassion.

Story
This is a true story. A transparent story of the life of a young man in America, who, like many of our lost youth, found his way into the drug culture. This story is an autopsy into the mind, heart, and soul of an addict. It begins at childhood and takes us through the thoughts, turmoil, and inner conflicts of a person lost in the undercurrent of addiction, and ends in a climax of self-discovery and realization. It is a gripping tale of a suburban youth and his journey through the streets of Baltimore, institutions, prisons, addiction, and worst of all, his own mind.

Freedom from unnecessary suffering is the goal of both Buddhism and modern psychotherapy, yet each approaches this intention from a very different perspective. "Buddhist practice helps us awaken to a well-being that is independent of our circumstances," explains Bruce Tift, "while Western psychotherapy helps us bring our disowned experience into awareness in order to live in a more skillful and satisfying way."

Great material but unnecessarily crude language
Interesting with a lot of good interviews and ideas about getting and living well sober. My one complaint is that the language is unnecessarily crude with many F%$*^! bombs throughout - as if that means his experience was the worst of the worst compared with everyone else's. It was hard to distinguish his words from some of his great experts which left me wondering if most of the spiritual leaders I admire also speak as crudely when not overhead.
Other than that, good information. I am not convinced his addictive behavior was so much worse than everyone else's experience. Active addiction is painful to all involved and I see no reason to make it a competition.

Addiction is not only substance abuse.
Started listening to this book to understand the mindset of addiction to understand someone I care about more. Not only did it give me that insight, it helped me understand and start to recognize my own addictions and really appreciating addiction is not just correlated with substance abuse. He gives a lot of ways to understand and utilize tools to help when in a stress response.

Not for atheists or agnostics
I picked up this book because I was looking for a guide to recovery that did not involve imaginary forces. Talk about being beaten over the head by spirituality. This is no better than AA and the big blue book.
