About this listen

Everyone’s got their own demons.

When Valora Keri was six years old, she was tired of being bullied. So she did what any kid in her shoes would do: She freed a cat-demon in exchange for the power to fight back.

She might have accidentally killed her mother in the process.

Since then, she’s tried to balance the scales by living a good life in post-collapse San Francisco, tending bar in a seedy club and acting as protector for the girls who work there.

But when someone brutally murders one of her girls, all bets are off. Val will stop at nothing to avenge her death and bring the guilty to justice.

Her search for the killer takes her deep into San Francisco’s underground, uncovering vampires, shifters, mobsters, monsters, and ancient cabals—and something she never expected—a race to recover a magical artifact of terrifying power.

Now, Val must fight to avenge her friend and also save the city she calls home from the forces that want to tear it apart. All while trying to keep her own demon in check.

If you love flawed heroes who never stop fighting, snarky sidekicks, and found family, you’ll love this thrilling new urban-fantasy supernatural-mystery series.

Because everyone’s got their own demons.

This is my first book by this author and the first book I’ve listened to by the narrator.
I don’t normally do reviews but I wanted to let the author know I am anxiously awaiting the next in the series!

This was my first experience with A.C. Arquin's work, and I enjoyed it a lot. At first, the story format was a little disconcerting as it jumped from the present to the past and back again, but once I became accustomed to it, it was fine. I thought the character of Valora Keri was very entertaining. I was amused by the snarky repartee between the cat demon and Val. I am looking forward to the next book in the series. J.S. Arquin's narration was fine and kept my attention. I was given a free copy of the audiobook, and I have voluntarily posted this review.

Entertaining Dark Fantasy

The story is pretty good! unfortunately the narrator has a good reading voice but nearly every time he does a voice it's a high pitched a-tonal thing that's too loud and sounds like when good narrators do when they don't actually want to shout into their mics. but not everyone is shouting all the time my dude, someone make him stop and he will be alright.

Odd Narrator

I had high hopes for this story after reading the reviews and the summary. I work at a strip club myself, so that part caught my attention. While I enjoyed the beginning and ending of the story, the middle parts felt like they dragged out a lot and were difficult to follow.

One thing that makes this story tough to appropriately judge in audio format is the narrator. The narrator had a great speaking voice, but wasn’t the best when it came to character voices, especially the female lead. I’m guessing in this case that the author narrated his own work, maybe due to budgeting issues, but I think a female narrator might have worked a bit better with this story.

Another issue I had was that lead Val was constantly impetuous and angry; and at least until the end, did not seem to learn much from past mistakes. She strongly regretted killing fellow playmates and her own mother in a fit of rage as a child, but made the same mistake as a young adult. As an adult, she killed her lover when she found him in bed with another woman. In the present, she kills the wrong man in an attempt to avenge her friend’s murder. She finally seems to gain some control over her power and rage in the final chapters, so I guess the next in the series will reveal whether she has truly developed into a better person.

I think the plot and characters in this story have potential; but in this format, it was not for me.
