Step by Step. Planning ahead

This went great with the decluttering audiobook. The workbook helped me plan and execute room by room. Also not trying to tackle everything at once. Set a calendar for where and when. It kept me on task and reminded me of the things I set out to do when I was just starting and journaled what I wanted for each area. the only downside is the workbook and the book mirrored each other.

Good bonuses and content. Did not like cussing.

There were some great ideas shared by the author. While I appreciate the book's content, the bonus pages, and free ebook provided with the audiobook, the narrator's vocal fry was hard to listen to. I found myself increasing the speed on the audio to avoid reader's affect/tone. Normally, I listen to audiobooks on my commute to and from work; however, at one point, I had to stop playing it and finish the.remaining pages in the eBook. Additionally, I didn't care for all cussing. I felt it wasn't necessary and it took away from the author's credibility for me. Although I deducted one star for these "issues", I still found the information, advice, and tools given to be both helpful and effective, so I would recommend this book for people who want to overcome their struggle with chronic clutter.

Irreverent guide to decluttering

This decluttering book recognizes that decluttering sucks but emphasizes finding ways to make the process fun or thinking of it as a celebration of a new less stressful life. Some of the tasks are laugh out loud funny like sexy librarian and unsexy janitor role playing or literally saying goodbye to trash by screaming, cursing or using movie lines like hasta la vista baby. I liked listening to this audio book to help keep me motivated. There are also exercises, worksheets and self reflection provided to help you see how far you've come, if you have the time and motivation. My favorite checklist was for scrubbing the hard to reach places because it lists out all the little places that I forget to include when I'm decluttering. The book emphasizes doing decluttering all at once so I was a little confused by the title. If you download the freebies you'll get a pdf with "30 steps to decluttering all year" which breaks it into different areas like fridge, pots and pans etc so that you do eventually declutter every single area of your home which I can easily see taking a year.

Very helpful approach to decluttering

I was familiar with Kai's work in the past and was impressed with her ideas on organization, so I was delighted to be offered a chance to review this book in advance in exchange for an honest review.

I was not at all disappointed by the content, and was even very surprised at how much the audio version was helpful. I'd had my misgivings of how well an audio book would allow a "workbook" to function, but it was remarkably useful. (As an advance reader, I did not receive the link to the actual workbook that a buyer of the audiobook will be able to download from an included link. Without a doubt, having that pdf link will be wonderful for the reader.) Even without the actual workbook; however, I was able to follow along. What I found most useful was how nonjudgmental and encouraging Kai is. You really can get into the "swing of things" just from her well-thought-out approach and her helpful nudges toward improving attitude and philosophy toward clutter and not-clutter. She encourages one to have fun with the process, not get too bogged down in the "chore" of it, while at the same time, she does not pretend that it won't take effort -- a nice balance, I think.

I especially enjoyed hearing Kai's voice reading her book for us. Her tone and engaging style was delightful.

Now the not-so-great (of which I have only the one complaint): the foul language was greatly off-putting for me. She starts with only a hint at profanity in one chapter, which caused me to chuckle. In the next chapter, she replaces the hints with actual cussing, still acceptable, as these instances seemed well-placed and appropriate. But, by the end of the book, she's sounding more and more like a stevadore, and I was very distracted and annoyed by it. At some point, the foul language had just become too much for me, unnecessarily crude, and seriously clouding the vital message she was trying to convey. Perhaps, in print, this may not have been such a negative, but somehow hearing the seemingly endless assault of curse words vocalized like this was a bit too much for me. (Your mileage may vary, of course.)

Still, I will recommend this audiobook, and I will be referring to it again - or perhaps just to my notes, at the very least. Kai's approach to clutter is, without a doubt, a very thoughtful, useful, and helpful one.

Poor vocabulary

Like other reviews have noted the message got lost for me due to the extremely limited vocabulary choices... I prefer to listen to an audio book that is not swearing at me.
