An exiled priest. A demonic knight. The war between heaven and hell has begun...
Once the chief exorcist for the Vatican, Blake Rossi was thrown out of the church when an exorcism ritual went horribly wrong. And he’s been haunted by his failure ever since. Now, Blake wallows in guilt, and drinks himself to sleep every night.
But the former priest knows there are people still plagued by evil. People who need his help. When an old friend offers a chance for redemption, Blake agrees and becomes a freelance exorcist.
After traveling to California to help a reclusive old woman banish an ancient demon, Blake discovers his new career may be more dangerous than he originally thought. Years ago, this demon - a powerful knight of hell - was trapped by the woman’s father. Now it roams free, gathering an army of demonic soldiers to claim its bloody retribution.
The forces of hell have been unleashed....
And an exorcist with a tortured past is the only thing standing between them and millions of innocent souls.

This took me a while to become fully invested in. The plot doesn't really get going till nearly half way through the book, but once it does, it becomes hard to put down. I remember when I was younger and watched The Exorcist, it terrified me and I had nightmares for months after!!! I'm wary of reading books like it now because the thought still terrifies me. While this was chilling, it didn't come close to truly scaring me. Saying that though, I still listened to this within a day because I needed to see what would happen to Blake.
The best thing about the book for me were the characters. Blake was an easy one to like and I was rooting for him throughout. I didn't like Gregor as much but Lilith was awesome. Each of them was well written and developed.
In all, this was a really good read. There was a lot to like about it and I'm looking forward to more from Blake and the world the author has created.
Jake Urry is one of my favourite narrators. He has such a distinctive voice and always performs what he reads. I loved his creepy tone for the Demon!!
I was given this audiobook at my request and have voluntarily left this review. This in no way affected nor influenced my thoughts.
Really enjoyed!

They have success fighting minor demons and cleansing homes. When it came to fighting, Furcas, the Knight of Hell, all hell breaks loose. There are only two down and dirty major fights in the book. The one with Furcas is the climax and best of the story.
Gregor and Blake want information so they must summon a major demon. The point was to force the demon, Furcas to tell them why were there so many demons around and how to get rid of them. What happens when you have priest, demons, and secrets? The demons will always tell the truth about the filth in your life i.e. the degradation of your mother by your father, blaming you (knowing you blame yourself) in the death of innocents, or sexual perversions you may have. That stuff can make you drink.
I was disappointed with Sharon M. White and Scare Street, the authors. Corralling Furcas was a big part of the story. Yet, our heroes did nothing with the information they obtained from him. Gregor became obsessed with the Griogri book and Fenneal, one of the original Watchers. Fennel possessed Gregor for two days. But the relationship between Fenneal and Gregor was never expounded upon in the story.
I would call this a cozy scary story. There is no real oomph. You don’t have to worry about being frighten. The excommunicated alcoholic priest is not an original exorcist story. This story does not motivate me to read the next book. This ends in a cliff hanger.
just ok
