About this listen
Destiny of the Dead is the second audiobook in the genre-bending Shroud of Prophecy series from New York Times best-selling author Kel Kade.
The God of Death is tired of dealing with the living, so he’s decided everyone should die. And he’s found allies. The Berru, an empire of dark mages, has unleashed a terrifying army of monstrous lyksvight upon everyone with a pulse.
While the wealthy and powerful, the kings and queens, abandon the dying world, one group of misfits says no more. Through dogged determination and the ability to bind souls to their dead bodies, Aaslo and his friends fight on.
In the mountains of the far north, another bastion of defense is opened. Cherrí, the avatar of a vengeful fire god, has united the survivors amongst her people and begun her own war on the invaders.
Now, Aaslo and Cherrí must find a way to unite their powers, one divine, the other profane, to throw back the monsters of the Berru and challenge Death itself.

Story
Mankind has lorded over the land of Illian for a thousand years, building on the ruins left by the elves, as if it were their birthright. A thousand years is a long time for an immortal race to see the truth of things, a truth that has remained unsaid for a millennium - elves are superior. They are faster, stronger, and connected to the magical realm in a way that man could never grasp. Illian should belong to them.

Minalan gave up a promising career as a professional warmage to live the quiet life of a village spellmonger in the remote mountain valley of Boval. It was a peaceful, beautiful little fief, far from the dangerous feudal petty squabbles of the Five Duchies, on the world of Callidore. There were cows. Lots of cows. And cheese. For six months things went well: He found a quaint little shop, he befriended the local lord, the village folk loved him, he found a sharp young apprentice to help out, and, best yet, he met a comely young widow with the prettiest eyes.

Everyone loves Mathias. Naturally, when he discovers it’s his destiny to save the world, he dives in headfirst, pulling his best friend, Aaslo, along for the ride. However, saving the world isn’t as easy, or exciting, as it sounds in the stories. The going gets rough, and folks start to believe their best chance for survival is to surrender to the forces of evil, which isn’t how the prophecy goes. At all. As the list of allies grows thin and the friends find themselves staring death in the face, they must decide how to become the heroes they were destined to be.

Story
Monsters and beasts roamed the earth and were slain by soldiers and adventurers who were, in turn, killed by stronger threats. Heroes and villains created new epics and were forgotten when their successors appeared. This was the way of the Infinite World. Summoned into this chaotic place, a young boy with no name and no past must learn to survive. Bound to a master who doesn't care whether he lives or dies, he must become stronger. The question is: how?

Thea is a washed-up mimic exterminator who expected more out of life, not some hero from stories. Aven is an impulsive wandering adventurer whose personal goddess is constantly getting her into trouble. Neither of them has the slightest interest in getting involved in world-shaking historical events. History doesn't care what they want, unfortunately. It's fallen right into their laps in the shape of a god-slaying weapon from a fallen civilization. Thrown together out of chance, Thea and Aven will have to learn to work together if they want to survive their pursuers.

It's a circus
Entertaining beginning of the series. Kel Kade struggles to keep it that way with continually unfolding craziness that's annoying at times. Nick Podehl's dynamic performance makes it work. I'll be listening to book 3.

another great book
I really like the first one it was clever and subverted common tropes. I pre-ordered this one. This book is good and expands the magic and conflic. it feels like it is setting up for a great third book. I can't wait for the next release.

Epic Epic
Very thrilling and immersive continuation. Absolutely loved it and the introduction of more mini stories to make the whole. The separate adventures kept me experiencing different views and emotions that made the story a lot less one sided and more realistic.
However, it felt very short. All the events seemed to happen within the week or a similarly short period of time that caused a burst of excitement and then it was over.
Another theme I encountered which might be a spoiler to some, so I suggest not reading this part if you hate spoilers. The blessings mentioned throughout the story were kind of vague. For one, I can't imagine a Faye has more power to give than a god. And It's weird how the most blessed character is often overpowered. These are just some of my thoughts.
Overall, a great book and I look forward to listening to it again and others to come.
PS. hats off to the narrator. Made it even more worth the listen.

Terrific
I loved the dialogue between characters. Dolt has to be the best character in the book. I would recommend this to anyone who can handle blood and gore with some serious moments of great repartee and banter. I love the voices Nick Podehl gives to each person. He is a great actor!!

Great Narrator okay story.
Same Kel Kade Narrator that I've grown accustomed to. He's great. The story felt directionless though. A lot of "and then" moments rather than "therefore this" moments. The paladin character arc also felt like it was added in later rather than being an integral part of the story. Maybe it will all come together in the next book. I love Kel Kade's writing and I'm glad she's back. I'm looking forward to the next one.

Lots of action, but so many points of view
I enjoyed this second book, but went from telling the story from only one point a view to so many different ones did not make it as enjoyable as the first.

It is something.
Love Kal and all her books, this book was kinda frustrating though because I was worried about Aaslo and I was hearing of a different person. Overall it is still a good book and made me cry one to making times. Would listen/read again.
