About this listen
In the summer of 2004, Tony James Slater went to Ecuador looking to become a man. Not all of him returned. But the bit that did was fueled by a burning desire to do...something. Something that mattered. And, ideally, to get the hell out of England in the process.
His dream was to blatantly steal his friend Toby's dream - of escaping to Thailand and becoming a professional diver. But when a man like this goes on a search for adventure, it's bound to end in tears. And yet - what can actually go wrong? I mean, really? With renovating a house? With volunteering? With sailing? And selling your body to medical science? Surely, those are the kind of activities that any old idiot can pull off?
But then, this isn't just any old idiot. This is Tony James Slater - the man who was carrying that jaguar when it woke up. And to make things worse - he's not alone....
So batten down the hatches! Lock up your power tools! And for gawd's sake, turn the electricity off. Because that idiot from Ecuador is back. And this time, he's brought the whole family....

Anna was never anything like those "real" runners on telly, but when she read about New Zealand’s 3,000-kilometer-long Te Araroa Trail, she began to wonder...perhaps being a "real" runner was overrated. Maybe she could just run it anyway? The Pants of Perspective is a witty, colorful, and at times painfully raw account of a journey to the edge of what a woman believes herself to be capable of. It is a coming-of-age story that will lead you on a roller-coaster ride through fear, vulnerability, courage, and failure.

Tony's (mis) adventures are over the top funny!
As with all of Tony James Slater's travel books, the situations he finds himself in are so absurd that you know they actually happened. Best of all, his writing gives the sense that you are right there with him, knowing that he will somehow successfully get himself out of precarious situation after precarious situation. Then you will want to have a beer and just hang out with him, recalling the day's adventures!

Funny!
This is really more a collection of several adventures that Tony experiences, as opposed to one continuous story as his other books have been. The biggest portions were his family going through the process of renovating a house to flip (how on Earth did he make THAT funny?) and his time in Thailand. Also some mini-distractions in between. Like having control of the wheel of a sailboat for the first time ever while also sailing through hurricane force winds. Seems reasonable! All in all, the book is hilarious and a great distraction. As always, Tim Campbell does a great job with narration as well.
