About this listen

For Lizzie Riley, switching her six-year-old son, Tom, to the local academy school marks a fresh start, post divorce. With its excellent reputation and delightful red-brick building, Lizzie knows it'll be a safe space away from home.

But there's something strange happening at school. Parents are forbidden from entering the grounds, and inside there are bars across the classroom windows.

Why is Tom coming home exhausted, unable to remember his day?

What are the strange marks on his arm?

And why do the children seem afraid to talk?

Tom's new school might seem picture-perfect. But sometimes appearances can be deceiving....

A chilling psychological thriller for anyone who loved Behind Closed Doors, Sometimes I Lie and The Couple Next Door.

I often shop based on narrator, and Imogen Church is my favorite. This promised to be a dark, psychological thriller, my favorite genre, and it delivered. As for the big twist at the end, this is where the story lost points in my estimation. Without throwing out spoilers, much of the creepiness that I was invested in seemed abandoned for another direction. That said, the author does tie it all together, and I was riveted until the end. Lizzie and Kate are both well developed characters. The creepiness factor of the school is intriguing.

Ten hours of Imogen Church is worth a credit

Even though I suspected the twist very early on, I really enjoyed this book.
Great narration too which made this book an easy listen.

easy listen

It was very suspenseful! I was guessing the whole time. The only hang up was hearing the narrator swallow. That happened many times throughout the book and was very annoying.

Left me guessing the whole time!

The story was ok a bit of a surprise toward the end and a few red herrings along the way. The narrator was very annoying. Sometimes she would whisper making it hard to make out what she was saying. I get the drama but if I can’t hear you what’s the point?

Ok but

Good read. You don't see the end coming together like it did. I highly recommend this book. The chase at the end was my favorite part.

wow for an end

The recording was up and down, too loud one moment, then too quiet. Drove me nuts to constantly adjust the sound. Took away from the story.

well, still listening actually... but loving it for the character Tessa! She is hilarious and I want a movie to be made from the book with Imogen Church playing Tessa. The comic relief Tessa )vis a vis Imogen) brings to the story which is otherwise rife with angst and despair and frustration, is totally refreshing in a mystery thriller. It may also be that i can relate by occupation to the world of social services mayhem though... I still reccommend the book!

Loved It!

Kept me interested from opening sentence up to the very end. Narrator is spot on as she always is. Her variation of the characters voices are perfect.
I nearly always can predict the twists in plot line, but I have to admit, I didn’t see this coming. Highly recommend

Ok, you got me!

Usually, I’m able to guess who the “bad guy” is rather early. I thought I had it pinned down but I was totally wrong! I was stunned. What a great listen!

I wasn’t expecting that!!!
