About this listen

In a kingdom unraveling into chaos, one outcast and her dragon hold the key to restoring balance—if they can survive long enough to unlock their power.

Since the day Dayie washed ashore as a baby, her village saw her as an outsider. Mistrust turned to fear when Deadweed—a sinister, invasive blight—devoured their land. Blamed for its spread, Dayie is sold to the ruthless Dragon Traders, her mysterious origins deemed a curse.

Years later, desperate for freedom, Dayie steals a dragon egg to pay her debt. But when the egg hatches in her hands, revealing the fiery and untamable dragon Zarr, her plans collapse. Hunted by the Dragon Traders and threatened by the encroaching Deadweed, Dayie must keep Zarr hidden—or risk losing him forever.

Her path shifts when she meets Akeem, a seasoned Dragon Rider, who reveals that the Deadweed is fueled by dark magic—and that Dayie’s bond with Zarr is for life. Now, she faces an impossible choice: surrender her dragon and finally grasp freedom or join the fabled Training Hall of Dagban. There, she could uncover the truth about her origins and find a way to stop the Deadweed’s spread.

Dayie’s destiny awaits, if she’s brave enough to follow it…

Magic, Dragons, and Adventure

Daye was an orphan girl with a way with animals that was bought by a not very nice woman trader. The trader's family had her and her son steal dragon eggs to sell to the South. Daye's egg cracked early and bonded with her and it was a red dragon. Daye's bonding with the dragon led to a new awareness and confidence about her self. Daye met with the wild bunch and their leader but it was not what fate had led her to. She was led to be trained by the seven and being the first to bring their own dragon with her. She made a name for herself with the seven and later became one of the seven. I am looking forward to a sequel to this wonderful novel.

Very good read

Not the best narrator that ava has had but a very good story all the same, I could see this shaping into a classic

Interesting "Villain"

I really like that the "villain" in this story is so different than in traditional fantasy book. There is no evil sorcerer here (or at least, not in this book of the series...I don't know about the rest). But I don't know yet if I like having a plant as the enemy. There are parts that I like, and parts that I don't. The idea is just so different that I have not yet decided. I loved the personality of the young dragon...somehow it seemed like a combination of part dangerous dinosaur beast and part puppy...a very interesting combination that really seems to work here.

I do like the characters... Dayie is a great, imperfect heroine, and Akeem seems a good hero, although maybe a little too good. The bouncing back and forth between their story lines, each told in the first person, threw me off a few times, even though the narrator did a pretty good job of giving them different voices...they were just not quite different enough for it to be obvious to me who was speaking.

Overall the narration was quite good, although there were several words pronunciations that caught me as strange. Especially early in the book, words like subsequent, conflagration, and ichor, were not pronounced the way I expected, and some seem to have a different pronunciation later in the book. I cannot say for certain that my pronunciation is correct and not the narrator's, but I think there were errors. And somehow, Dayie's singsong Maa Maa Laa seemed to me like it should be stronger and more melodious than presented here. Even so, I really liked the personality the narrator brought to each of the characters.

Very well done and strongly recommended

Fun new dragon tale

Ava Richardson knows how to make an amazing story and world revolving around dragons! I adored the beginning to this series and hope to be able to continue it. Dayie has to go through a lot of struggles and I enjoyed seeing her challenged and watching her grow. I also loved a lot of the supporting characters and hope to get to know them more in the future books. Definitely a great paced story set in a unique world with lots to enjoy. *I was given this book in exchange for an honest review.
