Publisher's summary

For fans of Knives Out comes a spellbinding thriller from the author of the #1 New York Times bestseller The Woman in the Window

“I’ll be dead in three months. Come tell my story.

So writes Sebastian Trapp, reclusive mystery novelist, to his longtime correspondent Nicky Hunter, an expert in detective fiction. With mere months to live, Trapp invites Nicky to his spectacular San Francisco mansion to help draft his life story . . . while living alongside his beautiful second wife, Diana; his wayward nephew, Freddy; and his protective daughter, Madeleine. Soon Nicky finds herself caught in an irresistible case of real-life “detective fever.”

You and I might even solve an old mystery or two.

Twenty years earlier—on New Year’s Eve 1999—Sebastian’s first wife and teenaged son vanished from different locations, never to be seen again. Did the perfect crime writer commit the perfect crime? And why has he emerged from seclusion, two decades later, to allow a stranger to dig into his past?

Life is hard. After all, it kills you.

As Nicky attempts to weave together the strands of Sebastian’s life, she becomes obsessed with discovering the truth . . . while Madeleine begins to question what her beloved father might actually know about that long-ago night. And when a corpse appears in the family’s koi pond, both women are shocked to find that the past isn’t gone—it’s just waiting.

The end of story

One review I read was titled “stay with it” unfortunately I couldn’t. It was confusing and I can’t honestly say it’s because I got bored and therefore lost or if it was just boring. I figured the twist out half way through and couldn’t finish it. I’ll be waiting for his next book with high hopes.

So good!

I loved this book! The plot had a lot of the elements of detective noire that were characteristics of Sebastian Trapp’s novels. There were some great twists that I never saw coming. At one point I thought I had it figured out, but I was so wrong! I enjoyed the way it was written and the narrator added so much. I can’t wait for this author’s next book!

Stay with it

It took me a while to get into the story but I’m glad I stuck with it as it was surprising and very good.

Hard to Follow

I had a hard time following this as an audiobook. I am curious if it would be easier to follow along as a book. The characters would go off on tangents and I would be lost.

predictable

the writing is beautiful, but the plot is completely predictable. within just a few chapters I already knew who did what, who was who, and what would happen. that's annoying. too much foreshadowing, not enough imagination. The narration was really good, and for a YA it would be an easy read.

Different, but so good

This book was so good. The way this book is written is different than most everything else I've read or listened to. So for the first half I was so confused. I kept having to go back and listen to parts again. But once I caught on, I was hooked. It kept me guessing, and the ending was great. I never saw it coming.

Good Not Great & extremely Slow

This is a GOOD psychological thriller. Not great. Not amazing. Just good. Nicky is called upon by Sebastian Trapp to write his ending life story as he doesn’t have much longer to live. Sebastian lost his first wife and son 20 some odd years ago. His life and that of his wife and child were hellish to say the least. The story is so freaking slow to come out. At several points , I wanted to stop and give in BUT I trudged through it. The twist at the end is interesting. I didn’t have it totally figured out but I was close. Did I enjoy this one by Finn? Not as much as I enjoyed The Woman in the Window and not as much as I was so hoping to. Would I recommend this one? Only to a select group.
