Publisher's summary

Betrayal and desperation are a dangerous combination in this thrilling continuation of the Surviving Ashes series by USA Today best-selling author Kennedy Layne....

Berke Daniels has learned to live as if there is no tomorrow, because he knows firsthand it can all be taken away in a moment. His only family consists of those men he'd served with in the Corps, and he's been thinking about leaving Texas and being closer to his brothers-in-arms.

Maxie Denikin has lived up to her father's expectations and more in her achievements thus far as a decorated police officer. She's dedicated her life to the law, yet had little desire to raise a family after watching her own pull apart a piece at a time. Imagine her surprise when she became a surrogate mother to a one-year-old boy who'd basically been abandoned in her arms.

Berke learned long ago to be prepared for anything, but an eruption at Yellowstone National Park hadn't been on his top-10 most likely list. He'd planned on getting out on his own and making his way to where his team had gathered, but Maxie made that impossible when she did the unthinkable - she took him into custody. Desire burns deep as they both do their best to protect a young child while eluding the fiery elements around them to reach a safe haven that isn't as secure as they once thought.

The best of the series yet

What elevates Berke and Maxie’s romance is that all their conflict is external. Book 1 and 3’s couples were dealing with second chance romances complicated by PTSD. Here, the backstories aren’t as heavy.
Also, because there’s no sexual history, I felt like there was more suspense about how they’d get together and excitement for their first time.

The other thing that helped is the lessening of things that bugged me in the last two books. The voicing for the MCs was better and the sex scene narration wasn’t quite as cringe. I liked that both Berke and Maxie were forces to be reckoned with. I dug the Maguyvering they did on the journey to Lost Summit.
And hallelujah, we finally got some reveals on the villains. Okay, sure, the author still relied on the odd gimmick of convenient, and previous.y unknown connections … like suddenly a character is outed as
so and so’s ex, or so and so’s relative, or every member of the team ends up with a woman in the same span of a few days … what are the odds in the apocalypse? And, this one ends on a cliffhanger for the final book’s MCs. But, overall, I enjoyed this.

An Outstanding Series

Kennedy Layne did a terrific job on this novel and the outstanding series it is just off. The characters become more vivid with each succeeding novel until they feel like part of your family. The nonstop action is addictive.

Another excellent story. Can't wait to purchase Van's story next! I'm sure it will be just as exciting.
