Gear up for an all-the-feels, steamy slow-burn in this enemies-to-lovers sports romance about fighting for love when life's taught you it's a losing game.
Gavin
We've been teammates for two years, but it feels like a lifetime that Oliver Bergman's been on my last nerve. A demanding captain and veteran player, I'm feared and friendless, while he's the beloved rising star, all sunshine, smiles, and upbeat team spirit. To make matters worse, he's obscenely attractive. In short: he's genetically designed to get under my skin.
Avoiding Oliver has been my survival tactic on and off the field. But when Coach drops the bomb that we're now co-captains, avoiding him becomes impossible, and keeping the truth from him—let alone my distance—is harder than ever.
Oliver
Life was great until soccer legend Gavin Hayes joined the team and proved he's nothing like the guy I grew up idolizing. Instead, he's a giant—albeit gorgeous—grump who lives to rain on my parade. I've sworn off pranks since entering the public eye, so rather than settle our differences the Bergman way, I've had to settle for killing Gavin with kindness. There's just one problem: killing him with kindness is killing me.
To make matters worse, Coach gives us an ultimatum: put an end to our enmity or say goodbye to being captains. I'm prepared to be miserable while we meet her demands and make nice, but the last thing I expect is to discover an explosive attraction we can't help but act on, and worse yet, to realize the man hiding beneath Gavin's gruff exterior is all I've ever wanted.

I absolutely adored Gavin’s grumpiness and Oliver’s never-ending optimism. What a beautifully-written story that gave me all the feels from the time I started it yesterday evening through finishing it this morning. I may need to go back and listen to it again since I didn’t want it to end!

So, I went into reading this, not even realizing it was part of an entire series, let alone book 5 in said series. That said, I didn't feel like I missed much reading this as a standalone, but it definitely made me want to get to know the rest of the Bergman clan. Oliver and Gavin are such great characters. They have such great chemistry. I love the way Chloe handled the mental health aspect of both MCs. Oliver and Gavin have their own unique, individual struggles, and I liked seeing how they coped and healed on their own, as well as together. Oliver hides behind a mask of sunshine and happiness, living his life as a bit of a people pleaser, while underneath who he really is is struggling to stay hidden. Gavin is older, his body beaten down from soccer, and reaching the end of his career. He struggles with knowing who he is without soccer. Oliver and Gavin are opposites and rather antagonistic at the start, but they grow to see each other for who they really are. They see each other's insecurities and help the other see their strengths. They somehow work, and their rivalry grows into a friendship, and eventually more. This story is sweet, cute, and pretty sexy at times. I did get a little annoyed at times with the jokes and focus on Gavin's age, mostly from Gavin. But all in all, I really enjoyed this read and definitely recommend!
Also, side note, I couldn't help but chuckle with Oliver's lactose intolerance struggles because it's so relatable. Cheese is life.
Love the Bergman clan!

My one complaint is that they chose not to have two male narrators. And while Tim Paige is a good one, it’s hard to differentiate between Oliver and Gavin. Sometimes, if I missed the start of the chapter, I’d have to pause to figure out who’s POV I was listening to. I wish they’d have chosen to haven two different readers with two distinct voices.
One of My Favorite Bergmann Brother Books
