Critic reviews

"With a plot featuring personal conflicts, corporate corruption, and ruthless villains, this audiobook is a fast-paced listen. Narrator Kate Burton rises to the challenge of voicing both the male and female protagonists with ease. There's a large cast of characters of both genders and across generations, and Burton's smooth portrayals ensure that they're all easy to distinguish, even during the fast-moving dialogue." -AudioFile

Engrossing

I have followed this series and the Rosato and Associate series from the beginning. The first series was about Bennie Rosato. Mary DiNunzio, Judy Carrier and Anne Murphy were hired later on; then Mary and Bennie became partners. Lately the books featured Mary, but in this book Scottoline features almost equally DiNunzio and Rosato.

Mary’s clients come primarily from South Philly amongst the Italian population and are small businesses and individuals. Bennie primarily has corporations as her clients and is mostly a constitutional lawyer. Simon Pensiara, who Mary has known all her life, comes in to hire Mary with his father, the other Tony and Mary’s father. Simon was fired from his job because his daughter needed a bone marrow transplant for leukemia. The company is self-insured and the child’s illness is costing too much. Bennie informs Mary she cannot take the case because Bennie represents the parent corporation of Simon’s company. It is a conflict of interest. Mary says she has to take the case or lose her local clients. Then Simon is accused of murdering his prior boss. Bennie and Mary join together to solve the murder. But will this be the end of the Rosato and DiNunzio law firm?

The book is well written and provides insights into the workings of a law firm. The plot twists and turns as the suspense continuously builds. The ending of the book is a surprise. The interaction between Bennie and Mary brings up issues of the nature of partnerships, loyalty and individual responsibilities. The book provides entertainment but also some interpersonal relationship issues to think about.

The book is almost nine hours long. Kate Burton does an excellent job narrating the book. Burton has narrated many of the books in both series. I enjoy listening to Burton’s great alto voice. Burton is an actress and award-winning audiobook narrator. Burton is the daughter of Richard Burton.

One of the family

When I listen to one of Lisa Scottoline’s novels I can’t help feeling like I am an extended member of the Donunzio family or an intern at the firm. This installment was no exception. Kate Burton is so easy to listen to. She knows her craft. As a performer, there are few who can change voices and read with such prosody as Ms. Burton. I have read most of this series, getting to know the characters with more each installment. I loved the twists and turns in this story. In one scene in particular, the increasing tension of the drama playing between Benne and Mary, that I was hoping for a longer drive to work. If you are a fan, or new to Ms. Scottoline, your only question will be when can I come back to visit the family.

Wonderful performance but a so-so mystery

Let’s face it; Kate Burton is a brilliant actor. She gives a stellar performance here. The problem is that the story is just okay, if that. I was able to figure out much of the plot far too soon. The characters are essentially flat. None did anything surprising; all their actions were predictable.

It’s hard to write a mystery series and keep things fresh. Sue Grafton, Sara Paretsky, and Tana French, among others) are masters; Lisa Scottoline isn’t. If you are looking for a diversion, and don’t want your brain excersised, or just want the pleasure of a master narrator, by all means, buy this book Otherwise, skip it.

Family vs. life challenges

I enjoyed the strong woman heronine line. Especially enjoyable, to me, was the essence of the importance of family and friendship in life.

The narration was good but not great.

the ending was predictable but fun.

Super woman to the rescue

Love the storyline.
I get Mary is seriously injured.
But really worrying about sliding in her own blood. She is dead if not, so what difference does it make if she slide in her blood or they shoot her. Also how do two upper class white female attorney get bold enough to get into a dangerous situation. I've read one too many white women in peril story, where the woman becomes bada$$ and overtake the assailant. Do any of these women ever loose. I've followed Bennie and the gang for over 10 years. They seam to be a reoccurring themes of jumping in a case that go left in a bad way taking them on a dangerous journey that they miracle upon miracle they survive. I didn't know white collar work was so dangerous.

great book

Anytime Denunzio's colorful family is involved it's a real pleasure. The character work is so full and engaging. Her extended family adds laughter and joy to the story.
