Publisher's summary

After a fallout with his business partner and a breakup with his girlfriend, lawyer Sam Johnstone thinks a long vacation might be just what the doctor ordered.

Before he can quit town, Sam gets a call from Lucy Beretta, the wife of the missing local college president. With a shocking accusation against an acquaintance and a plea for protection, Lucy derails Sam's plans for a quiet escape.

But when her alleged attacker turns up dead, Lucy is charged with his murder - and Sam is appointed to represent her. As he struggles to prepare his defense, Sam discovers that Lucy is lying - about a lot of things. The facts are not in her favor, and to make matters worse, Lucy is also a suspect in her husband’s disappearance.

If Sam is successful, a guilty woman may go free - and if he’s not, he will have failed at his job. Facing a client who can’t seem to tell the truth, an aggressive prosecutor eager for a conviction, and an ethical dilemma of epic proportions, Sam faces his most challenging case yet.

Great legal drama!

I enjoyed this story. It moved at a good pace. The characters were so real that I found myself yelling at my cell phone. Attorney Johnston was a flawed but honest hero. Integrity won the day.

Another captivating legal thriller by James Chandler

I greatly enjoyed this 3rd in his Sam Johnstone series. Each chapter drew me in further until I couldn’t set it down until finished. Starting number 4 soon!

Master of Surprise Ending

It was so satisfying to discover that, Sam the lawyer, always follows the law and is personally an ethical man, rare.

A very good listen

Overall a good listen although a bit frustrating how gullible men are for a pretty face. A very satisfying conclusion but a bit too romanticised to be believable. Nonetheless it left a smile on my face and a renewed hope for men in general. Definitely will be going for book 4.

Hooked!

Am on book 3 of James Chandler’s Sam Johnstone series. After a somewhat slow start in Book 1, I have been hooked. By now, in book 3, I am looking forward to hearing about each loose end from Book 1, 2, and 3! Excellent narration and am looking forward to the next few!

Better than the first two

James Chandler is hitting his stride! I liked the first two novels in this series, but I couldn’t put this one down. Really good!

Love Courtroom Drama

Another great James Chandler legal story. Couldn’t stop listening once I got started. Had to find out how the jury would vote.

Not horrible.

Pretty good listen. Not as enjoyable as the first two books. Any mystery as to “whodunnit” is removed very early in the story. The Sam Johnstone character remains flawed and interesting. Also some nice revisiting of previous book characters. The story has a fairly good flow, but the suspect/client’s characterization is so silly, it’s a bit cringey.
