About this listen

Outnumbered by the superior forces and firepower of the Syndicate Worlds, the Alliance fleet continues its dangerous retreat across the enemy star system. Led by the legendary Captain John “Black Jack” Geary, who returned to the fleet after a hundred-year suspended animation, the Alliance is desperately trying to return home with its captured prize: the key to the Syndic hypernet, and the key to victory…

Geary is convinced that the Syndics are planning to ambush the fleet and finish it off once and for all. Realizing the fleet’s best (and only) chance is to do the unexpected, Geary takes the offensive and orders the fleet to the Sancere System. There, a multitude of possible routes home give the Alliance fleet a better chance of avoiding their pursuers—and an attack on the Sancere shipbuilding facilities could decimate the Syndic war effort.

Weary from endless combat, the officers and crew of the Alliance fleet can’t see the sense in charging deeper into enemy territory—prompting a mutiny that divides them and leaves Geary with higher odds against him than ever before…

Above average not amazing

I thought this was a really good followup but their are two relationships that are just kind of agonizing. Better writing on the story would have helped.

Shut Up

One thing I find ultimately ridiculous, Before every book in this series Jack Campbell walks around a room the Army calls a "I love my wall," The one statement sums it all up: "One of the endearing themes... Really? Isn't our job to decide how endearing a book might be?

Oh by the way, I really like this series and have listened to it several times. I just skip the ego rant.

A strong sequel

I really enjoyed the first book in this series and Campbell has done a great job keeping the story as engaging in the follow up.

Don't worry the music fades away😊

Somehow Geary always makes the right decisions strategically, dealing with non-combatants, and in motivating his fleet personnel. But, I'm ok with it. It's an idealized version of a hero, yet the overall story is compelling. u
I enjoy how relativistic effects and relative speed are explored in the battles. Although there is a lot of redundant exposition of the encounters.
One note to the narration editor: Changes in scene require a longer pause than between paragraphs. Otherwise a listener may not realize the captain's chair is not, in fact, in the bathroom. (-just hyperbole, not an actual event in the book.)

The demands of command

When people know you’re in charge there is a certain amount of jealousy that people feel . They think they should be in charge. They feel they can do it better.
The rules of command.

Great Adventure Series

This series is a great example of classic genre storytelling. I stumbled upon the series in the middle and have gone backward and forward to get the full story. If you are looking for a light entertaining space opera, this is worth your time.

space fleet combat strategy

overall ideas and story is compelling and enjoyable but sometimes the pace drags. A little to much dialogue exposition.

Really Great Space Battles

The descriptions of all the space battles are very understandable and fun to follow along (with). Captain Geary trying to herd his cats of Commanders and Captains at conference meetings, brings back memories of my corporate career. But now, I can get some good laughs as Captain Geary herds and coaxes his fleet to victory!

The great hero hits his first obstacle

As if Captain John Geary didn't have enough to worry about with his command of the fleet shaky as it was even after he had saved them all. The author threw in a curve ball that we had to expect was coming. It was in the form of Captain Falco who Geary liberated from a POW camp. He reminds me of Marine/Army officers I knew and had come from well off families. They were simply there to do their time and then go off to careers in politics or corporate board rooms. Captain Falco has the idea that many today have concerning congress and that is that they can do it better. Can they? Geary has to deal with this very issue and keep his fleet together and despite another victory here in this book will he keep the command living up to 'fearless’ name? The author sticks true to the military way and to science fiction.
