About this listen

The acclaimed author of Ms. Bixby’s Last Day and Posted returns with an unforgettable tale of love and laughter, of fathers and sons, of what family truly means, and of the ways in which we sometimes need to lose something in order to find ourselves.

Rion Kwirk comes from a rather odd family. His mother named him and his sisters after her favorite constellations, and his father makes funky-flavored jellybeans for a living. One sister acts as if she’s always on stage, and the other is a walking dictionary. But no one in the family is more odd than Rion’s grandfather, Papa Kwirk.

He’s the kind of guy who shows up on his motorcycle only on holidays handing out crossbows and stuffed squirrels as presents. Rion has always been fascinated by Papa Kwirk, especially as his son - Rion’s father - is the complete opposite. Where Dad is predictable, nerdy, and reassuringly boring, Papa Kwirk is mysterious, dangerous, and cool.

Which is why, when Rion and his family learn of Papa Kwirk’s death and pile into the car to attend his funeral and pay their respects, Rion can’t help but feel that that’s not the end of his story. That there’s so much more to Papa Kwirk to discover.

He doesn’t know how right he is.

Humorous quirky tale

The story is Hilarious and unusually chaotic with family as the central theme. Kind of like a Where is Waldo!

Thoroughly enjoyed this book!

Not sure what I was expecting when I purchased this book but I was sure surprised! I enjoyed every minute of this and the narrator did a fantastic job. What a sweet story, funny and likable characters and feel-good ending. What more could you want to make your day lighter?! Would definitely recommend this book to pretty much everyone!

Made me laugh and cry

My 6th grader checked out this book for me to read but alas I was unable to find the time so I decided to listen instead. I loved this book! Orion was my daughter's age and his parents, roughly mine. I was able to relate to a lot of the little things pointed out in the book, reminded me of my childhood. I love books that make you contemplate life... this one does a wonderful job.

Wholesome

This was an unusually wholesome read for me but I enjoyed it thoroughly. The narrator brought a unique charm to the already unique and chamring story. Good stuff.

Entertaining and touching

I liked the realism of the family dynamics, and I liked that I both smiled and laughed a lot during this listen!

This will stay with you for a long time...

This is a book that is going to stay with me for a long time. Oh my goodness, such talent. This is my first book by John David Anderson and now I want to go look for more. At first, I wasn't sure it was for me as I'm one that likes more of a story and less narration. However, I'm so glad I kept up with it. It ended up being more story and it was so excellent, the narration didn't bother me. The narrator did a fantastic job as well. This was so unique, so fun, and filled with much emotion. You don't get much more talented than this. Just excellent. I can't recommend it more!

I Struggled To Get Through This

While I appreciate the messages within the story, it was too dull for my taste. It had some amusing parts, but the first 2/3 of the book was heavily stagnant. The ending was good, but I felt like they could've amped up the earlier chapters with less droning on.
