About this listen

Candice Fox's Fire with Fire is a non-stop, gripping thriller from "a bright new star in crime fiction." (James Patterson)

A pair of desperate parents. A man on the run. A rookie cop.

Four people with everything on the line.

What will be left in the ashes of the next 24 hours?

Following their daughter's mysterious disappearance, Ryan and Elsie Delaney have taken the LAPD forensic lab hostage, and have given law enforcement an ultimatum: Find their daughter, Tilly, or they will destroy all the evidence they can find to other cold cases.

Detective Charlie Hoskins has been undercover in a deadly motorcycle gang for five years. With his cover blown, he has no choice but to find Tilly himself, or lose everything he's worked for as the lab burns.

Lynette Lamb was a police officer—until yesterday, when she was fired before her first beat. Figuring out what happened to Tilly is her one and only chance at rejoining the career she's prepared her whole life for.

Hoskins and Lamb will have to team up to solve this cold case, and will have to move fast—before the situation explodes.

Critic reviews

"Jay Aaseng takes an outstanding, edge-of-your-seat crime thriller and makes it even better with a pitch-perfect execution.... The many characters in this audiobook range from from the hard-bitten detectives to the policewoman who was fired on her first day on the job, and assorted cops and criminals. Aaseng makes them all seem human as rebel Detective Charlie Hoskins teams up with the recently fired rookie cop, Lynette Lamb, to do the impossible: find Tilly or her body." (AudioFile)

This story is twisty, funny, and totally engrossing. I absolutely loved it. The narrator reads really quickly. I actually slowed down the speed…which I’ve never done before…and that made it a better pace.

Great, griping story

The Crimson Lake series was top notch and the few book in between that series and this new book were ok in my opinion. So I went into this book thinking it was going to be subpar. It was one of my top reads for 2023. Hope it turns into a series!

Hopefully this will be a series!!

I must preface this with a confession that I am a fan of Candice Fox. But I also listen to about five audio books per month and her stories always keep me engaged with just right pacing, interesting characters, and plots that don’t give away the ending too soon. Fire With Fire did not disappoint. The contrast in age and experience between the women, the youthful Lamb and seasoned Ferboden and their contrasting response to crisis was an interesting way to present dimension in the storyline that stepped away from the typical male-female juxtaposition. The only element in this story that seemed glossed over for me was any mention of concern for maintaining the chain of custody for evidence. Seems to me the value of evidence obviously accessed by those who threatened to destroy it, destroyed or not, would be diminished. However, I was able to overlook that element of the storyline in favor of enjoying the rest.

A book to keep your attention

Overall, this is a good listen. I enjoyed the story and the characters. But the narrator was terrible. Could not pronounce simple words such as pedophile and aluminum. Very distracting!

Great story, poor narration
