About this listen

Trenton Colman is exceptionally creative, with a knack for all things mechanical. But his talents are viewed with suspicion in Cove, a steam-powered city built inside a mountain. In Cove, creativity is a crime, and invention is a curse word.

Kallista Babbage is a repair technician and daughter of the notorious Leo Babbage, who died in an explosion - an event the leaders of Cove point to as an example of the danger of creativity.

Working together, Trenton and Kallista learn that Leo Babbage was developing a secret project before he perished. Following clues he left behind, they begin to assemble a strange machine that is unlike anything they've ever seen before. They soon discover that what they are building may threaten every truth their city is founded on - and quite possibly their very lives.

Awesome discovery!

I was looking for a book while I was waiting on my next Brandon Mull book to come out. And man I must say this book was a great discovery and well worth it! And best it’s read by Kirby Heyborne!!!

narration could use some work

the story is interesting enough but the narration is irritating sometimes...
I will say that I'm only about a quarter of the way through the book. Maybe it'll get better.
edit: finished the book. it got better! something I did to help with the narration was play it on 1.15x speed. the yelling gets really grating at times still, but the story makes up for it.

this was AWESOME

I put this on for my kids at bedtime and I'm hooked. Excited is an understatement when I discovered the other two books are also "included" ,this was so entertaining and well written. It should be a movie of it isn't already.

INSANELY AMAZING!!! but WAY too much yelling!

Suspense, dragons, fire, romance, kids going on adventures, mystery, everything
a good book needs ( in my opinion ). the plot, world-building, characters, just
amazing! I found simini really annoying, though. a fantastic book!

Excellent creative and clean story

Yes, there was some extra suspension of disbelief, like how the main character didn't know what a dragon was, but really used the word "dive bomb" when he should have no knowledge... Let alone a knowledge of the mathematics of flight... But hey, it was a pretty great story for young teens and a dad. Kirby did excellent narrating

My opinion on fires of invention

To start of, of all the readers this book has the best one in audible. The story line is also very creative, and not once throughout the whole book i did not think about no reading this book.I got very attached to Simmin and Trenton Angus was not someone I got attached to though.

A Nice Dystopian YA Book

Oh lord this narrator! I sped him up to 1.2x and I honestly cannot imagine listening to it at the normal pace. He’s does a great job with the characters and I’m still listening to the book, but dear Lord I had to warn you guys. Haha!

Hmm

I haven’t finished it yet, but That’s because I’m not sure I can. It may get better but so far it’s a cheesy piece of crap, it was easy to predict what was going to happen at the start. I am going to keep listening but be warned if you are going to buy it.
