About this listen

For Kerry Murphy, the inferno is never far away. The flames of that long-ago night still burn in her nightmares: the heat, the choking smoke, the helplessness. She can never run fast enough. In this explosive psychological thriller, Kerry Murphy, a gifted arson investigator haunted by her mother's death in a fire, teams up with a mysterious operative Silver to stop a psychopath determined to set the world on fire. Assisted by her loveable dog Sam, she soon discovers that in order to catch him, she must put her secret weapon to the test, a prospect that terrifies her more than anything.©2004 Johansen Publishing LLLP (P)2004 Books on Tape, Inc. "[A] rip-roaring thriller...just might increase the sale of fire extinguishers." (Publishers Weekly)

interestingly different

Definitely on my list of books to read again. I started off reading Johansen's Eve Duncan books and frankly got tired of the plots - it was good to find that she had other more interesting characters to write different plots with. This one had me thinking of Koontz's style of writing.

Narrator is great, female lead is weak

The narration of this book was excellent. Never sleepy and well paced and varied. The plot and character depth took a pleasant twist from near the beginning which was great because I was skeptical when the book began (initially wondering "is that all there is?").

One disappointment was with the main character. She didn't ever make me sympathize with her or even want her to succeed. Many times she came off as one-dimensionally defiant and at the same time never really knows what to do (no plan of her own) which just added up to annoying for me.

The rest of the characters and the first rate narration make up for this and help make this a pretty good book instead of the excellent one it could have been if the female lead was either made brighter or a better decision maker.

Another Great Johansen book

One of the things I especially love about Iris Johansen is the way characters you have met in previous books show up in the current book or provide background for the current characters. Firestorm was an excellent read. I can't wait to see where Kerry and Silver will turn up next!

I AM SORRY, JUST CAN'T FINISH

As a general rule I Johansen's books are good. This one is the exception. Her main character is stupidly bullheaded and self centered and I have no patience with either trait.
