About this listen

Revolutionary flames ignite around Annie, Lee, and a brand-new character in the follow-up to Fireborne.

After fleeing the revolution and settling into the craggy cliffs of New Pythos, the dragonlords are eager to punish their usurpers and reclaim their city. Their first order of business was destroying the Callipolan food supply. Now they're coming for the dragonriders.

Annie is Callipolis' new Firstrider, charged with leading the war against New Pythos. But with unrest at home, enforcing the government's rationing program risks turning her into public enemy number one.

Lee struggles to find his place after killing kin for a leader who betrayed him. He can support Annie and the other Guardians...or join the rebels who look to topple the new regime.

Griff, a lowborn dragonrider who serves New Pythos, knows he has no future. And now that Julia Stormscourge is no longer there to protect him, he is called on to sacrifice everything for the lords that oppress his people - or to forge a new path with the Callipolan Firstrider seeking his help.

With famine tearing Callipolis apart and the Pythians determined to take back what they lost, it will be up to Annie, Lee, and Griff to decide who - and what - to fight for.

Critic reviews

“Munda balances nuanced political intrigue and subtle characterizations with thrilling scenes of battle and heartbreaking moments of love and sacrifice...this volume will leave readers breathless for more.” (Booklist, starred review)

"Much like its predecessor, this second book in the Aurelian Cycle trilogy finds its strength in complex, compelling characters and thought-provoking socio-political intrigue. Amid the politics there are plenty of dragon battles, clandestine missions, and secret meetings to keep readers flying through the pages, ending with a nail-biting cliffhanger. Highly recommended for middle and high school readers." (School Library Journal, starred review)

“Point-of-view chapters show complexities, provoking readers to think. In addition to the central will-they, won’t-they love story, there is a lovely subplot with a same-sex, cross-class romance. Exciting aerial battles, political machinations, and a bit of romance make this hard for readers to put down.” (Kirkus)

I thought the worse.

When I saw reviews on this book being woke I was afraid I wasted my money. Thankfully in my opinion there wasn’t. At least to the point where I couldn’t pin point it out and that it blocked story progression and the story overall. Crazy plot twist in the end. I enjoy listening to it overall.

Great book

So much better then the first. The story just grabs you by the dragon saddle and you don’t want to let go.

So Good!

Wow! This was as good, and as intense, as book one. I’m glad I have book 3 ready to go. I’m not sure I’d be able to handle that cliffhanger ending otherwise.

cliffhanger

That cliffhanger gutted me. This series has gotten better and better the more I read. I can't wait to start book three.

An AMAZING series!

This is an absolutely AMAZING book series. I know it's technically young adult, but even as a 45 year old about reader, it floors me how good these books are!

Rosaria Munda is the next year author. I kinda hope thus never gets turned into a movie or series without following the story exactly.

You have outdone yourself Rosaria! ❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️

Ooooh this one got me!

The beginning was a little slow, but once it picked up it went. I really enjoy how the author explores all the complexities of these characters. They are having to make difficult decisions with most of the time only half the information. I also like the various relationships explored - these characters are young and they are still deciding what and who gets to be a part of their journey in what capacity and it is not always straight forward, which is refreshing especially in a YA book. I love the politics, the strategy, and of course the dragons! Whooo and that ending?! On to the next one!

HOLY CRAP

I get easily annoyed during audio books when the readers try to change their voices to depict different characters, but with this reading they had three readers for the different characters. It added to the story-line and engaged me as a listener. The story was everything I was hoping for after the first Aurelian Cycle book. Can't wait for book 3!

Great Continuation

The first book felt like there was a lot of tell and not so much show. This book really corrected for much of that.

I really enjoyed seeing the new addition to the characters with POVs and I loved seeing how the other side lived!
