Publisher's summary

Sometimes you get a second chance at a first impression.

Mary Trace is bright, bubbly, and back in the dating pool in her mid-30s. All of her closest friends are in love, and she refuses to miss out on romance. So when a regular customer at her trendy Brooklyn boutique wants to set Mary up on a blind date with her son, she gives a hesitant yes. John Modesto-Whitford is gorgeous and well-groomed, so maybe dinner won’t be a total bust - until he drops a less-than-flattering comment about Mary’s age.

Desperate to be nothing like his snake of a politician father, public defender John Modesto-Whitford prides himself on his honesty and candor. But his social awkwardness and lack of filter just blew it with the most beautiful woman he’s ever dated.

Luckily, Mom’s machinations keep Mary and John running into each other all summer long, and soon they resort to fake dating to get her to back off. When their pretense turns to real friendship - and some surprisingly hot chemistry - can these two stubborn individuals see past their rocky start to a rock-solid future together?

favorite in the series of 3

I thought this was the best story in the three. I was apprehensive since I wasn't sure about the female narrator but she was great and the story was rather cute and funny. yes there was sexy scenes later in the book but that's how the series went. skip the chapter if it's not your jam.

Mostly sweet and romantic

This is full of sweet romance eventuality. There are plenty of misunderstandings and working out what each other really mean. I liked all that although it was a bit drawn out. Towards the end the romance takes a turn and the sex is described in more detail than I need. I don’t need to know what and who gets licked, nipped, stroked or wet. Long descriptions of sex aren’t for me. Otherwise I liked the book.

Consistently Good

All of this author’s stories are good, flirty, and fun. I liked the shorter three better and this one though overly long did not tie up some loose ends.

Perfect Ending to a Great Series

I'm sad this series seems to be over. The way the books were written left me wanting more. The buildups were slow and meaningful. The character development made sense. And the love connections themselves were just right. I loved the differences between John and Mary in this book. Both of them dealing with their own insecurities, not realizing at first what the other one was struggling with. It made their eventual get together that much sweeter and meaningful. And I must say the narration for this book was well done. The second book had an awful narration but the first and third were perfect. Cara Bastone is a wonderful writer and I look forward to seeing what else she has in store.

Enjoyed listening to this Story

Great read with interesting dynamics between the believable characters. Just enough drama with a happy outcome.

Great storytelling. Slow burn.

I love Cara Bastone's typical happy, sunny storytelling. No ridiculous, unrealistic conflict to overcome...just good old "getting in your own way" type conflicts. I love John with Mary, they really do suit well together. And I really connected with the prevailing theme of women, aging, and marriage/kids. The spice is SPICY, but be prepared to wait for that action until well into the final 3 hours of the reading to get into it. Worth the wait, imo.
Honestly, my biggest grievance is the cover art: it includes a dog, not a cat, which is the only pet mentioned in the novel. What a weird mistake. Lol.

Slow burn, but worth it

I enjoyed every bit of this story. The “sizzle” was a long wait, but loved the connection and getting to know one another of the main characters. I didn’t realize this was a series until later, so it was a little confusing trying to keep track of all the characters involved in the story. I do think this would have even been better as a dual narrative.

I enjoyed this book

I have the complaint I would think every author would appreciate of wanting more. The story is complete, but leaves many life questions unanswered. I consider it a HEA even though there are many things I think this couple will be dealing with in their future together. I think the author set them up for success by letting them get to know each other through their mistakes in reading each other at the beginning and their own self doubts projecting as rejection of the other, followed by little epiphanies that opened up their eyes to the real person and acceptance. Good solid story with well developed characters that take time to develop.
