About this listen

We live in a culture that's all about self, becoming the best "me" I can be instead of becoming like Jesus. This me-centered message affects every area of our lives - our friendships, our marriages, even our faith - and it breaks each one in different ways. The self-focused life robs our joy, shrinks our souls, and is the reason we never quite break free of insecurity.

In this book, Sharon Hodde Miller invites us into a bigger, Jesus-centered vision - one that restores our freedom and inspires us to live for more. She helps listeners:

  • Identify the secret source of insecurity
  • Understand how self-focus sabotages seven areas of our lives
  • Learn four practical steps for focusing on God and others
  • Experience freedom from the burden of self-focus

Anyone yearning for a purpose bigger than "project me" will cherish this paradigm-shifting message of true fulfillment.

life's better when it's not all about you

I've listened to this book in its entirety twice and have visited specific chapters several times. Great advice and I found it very relative to my actions. I find that I'm not able to do the changes at once, I need to remind myself and practice. The prayers and declarations provided in every chapter are a great reminder of why making life about others leads to more fulfillment for yourself.

Recommended highly

Excellent and provocative work. I learned a lot and felt called to the carpet in a very good way.

Surprised!

My sister-n-law recommended the book. Because she did I put it in my watch later folder, told her so. Then I figured I’d never get around to it. Not my kind of read. So I thought. But I started listening and couldn’t stop. It is an introspective, well written, and researched book - with many authors quoted. The author’s grasp of the value of serving others to free yourself from the trap of the idolatry of self is excellent. It clearly is written for women. But it is equally as valuable for men. As a man I certainly benefited from it. I didn’t expect much. But I was pleasantly surprised. I often laughed out-loud, and my heart was touched. I’ve recommended it to several men as well as women. The reader also was excellent. Thank you!

Exactly what I've needed to redirect myself

The narration of this book is easy to listen to.
The message of this book is necessary for every person though the content is directed toward women.
We know we can all greatly benefit from being less self-focused, self-motivated, self-centered, self-loathing. Sharon's book was far more useful and inspired better introspection than I had expected; it's also clear the author truly has journeyed through this process to a great depth. And she continues to do so.
I will likely return to this book numerous times to keep my focus on Christ and see myself as God intended me to see myself.

Excellent book!

If you could sum up Free of Me in three words, what would they be?

Worth the time!

What other book might you compare Free of Me to and why?

Bait of Satan. Both books are about our self-focus and how we can overcome this way of thinking.

Which scene was your favorite?

The chapter on love and on making God about me.

Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?

no, but I could

Any additional comments?

This is a great book. I didn't realize how self-focused I was until I read/listened to this. I am going through this book a second time a little slower. I want to learn to apply the truths taught in my daily walk.

Fresh Look, Refreshing

I bought this book because of a devotional I found in a Bible app by YouVersion. I loved that devotional and I loved this book. I have always been so worried about what others have thought of me, thinking that I could change myself to avoid all criticism and any hurt I accidentally put on others. It does not work. In fact, it only made things 10 times worse. You work to make one person you enjoy in your life happy, another now becomes upset. Others are irritated that you care so much about what people think of you(usually with good intentions), while others treat you as an inconvenience, etc, etc. It will never end. You cannot serve two masters(Matthew 6:24), and have a peace and joy in your life. This book brought me a fresh perspective. Just because someone slights me does not mean my existence is cause of someone else’s life being harder. There’s pain in life; we cannot change that. And we ourselves cannot heal another’s own hurt heart. Only Jesus can do that. Thank you for writing this book!

great advice

This book offers an alternate perspective to the self centered society we have developed. The author is a reliable source for insight with her PhD and lifelong walk in faith. I could especially apply the wisdom for the chapter on career decisions. "Examine the fruits, then you will know if it from God."

Life changing content

This book helped me realize the trap of self-focus that I had been in for years. The great examples and explanations helped me to see myself, but also gave me the tools to change my destructive and selfish behavior. I plan to listen to it several more times.

I do wish the book was recorded in the author's voice so I could hear the natural inflection and emphasis she would have used. The narrator sounds very unnatural and unrelatable to me.
