About this listen

From Ironman Triathlons to ICU Stays. Marathons to Muffin Meltdowns, Surfing Wipeouts to Dating Washouts....

A story for all ages and genders, for those struggling and supporters....

Zoom in on any of the momentous occasions in Ryan Althaus’s life, and you’re certain to see a certain shadowy someone lurking in the background—his "friend" Ed. But Ed’s not quite the friend you are envisioning. Ed is short for “eating disorder”, and he has an obnoxious way of infusing himself into every aspect of Ryan’s life—but not for long!

In his latest book, From Emaciated to Emancipated, certified psych chaplain and ex-professional runner Ryan "Mango" Althaus recounts the moment when he and Ed first crossed paths, as well as the not-so-traditional route he’s taken to ditch Ed following a near-death relapse that landed him in a psychiatric center. As anyone with their own Ed will know, recovery is a roller-coaster ride of ups and downs, but Ryan’s lighthearted approach will encourage, entertain, and inspire you to join in his quest to reclaim his life, laughter, and reason for being—without Ed in tow.

An honor to walk alongside

I am so proud of Ryan for sharing his story with such warmth and humor.

While this book is directed toward those struggling with “our friend ED“ I still found the book incredibly enlightening for what many of my friends and loved ones have endured as they walk the path of recovery.

heartfelt, honest, brave, and insightful

I really appreciate the author writing this book and sharing his story. As a guy who has been trying to recover on my own from anorexia nervosa for a long time now, it's beyond valuable for me to find voices that deal with this issue from their own personal perspective. I especially appreciate that he is open about the fact that he has even recently still struggled greatly and relapsed and shares that openly without apology. Thank you for writing and narrating this book!! :)
