About this listen

In this novel of escalating fear and suspense by Washington Post and Wall Street Journal bestselling author Minka Kent, a secret from a woman’s past unearths a lifetime of lies. How long can she run from the past?

On her fortieth birthday, Celia Guest has reason to celebrate. She has a loving marriage, a beautiful Connecticut home, and treasured friends. Celia has everything she’s ever wanted. But among the cards and well-wishes, she discovers a disturbing note: You don’t deserve any of this.

Who could be so cruel, so resentful, so…knowing? Then, in the early morning hours, Celia vanishes without a trace.

As suspicions and concerns rise among Celia’s friends, her sister Genevieve, with whom she shares a fractured and troubling bond, starts to piece together a shattered life that Celia fled from once before. As a foundation of lies begins to crumble, a terrifying childhood secret Celia thought was dead and buried comes to light.

And this time, there’s no getting away from the truth.

The first one I read from her blew me away. This one was solid, held my interest, but I felt like not much happened. There was a lack of tension for me. It held my interest, but it just was missing something. The twist was a bit predictable. Maybe it's because I know too well what men like her father are. Maybe it's a personal thing. The portrayal was accurate, but just...I can't put my finger on it as to why I never really feel like I connected with any of the characters. I was sympathetic to their plight, but in a way you'd be sympathetic to a stranger on the news. I've never had trouble connecting with her characters, and of all of them, the protagonist in this book SHOULD have been one that I connected with most, as our upbringings were so similar. But again, I just felt like we never got deep enough into her psyche as an adult. Yeah, we got inner monolog. But no real connection. And certainly very, very little in the way of suspense, especially since we pretty much knew what happened to her the whole time. I was also able to figure out too easily who wrote the note and a got pretty close to the reason why. I hate that this is one of my least favorites from Kent, because I truly enjoy her work, her style, her stories...I felt like this one may have needed a bit more depth and true tension But I'd recommend the read once and will continue to read her work. This definitely won't be one I ever feel the need to revisit though, like the first one I read from her.

We all need a sister like Genevieve. Despite Celia's pattern of behavior, she genuinely cared about her sister, and no matter what, she always took care to look out for her.

Good mystery!

Wasn’t that intriguing. I did like ending. Hate when the ending leaves you wondering what happened.

Just alright

She always has a surprise or two in her books. I try guessing the end but never quite get it right. Such a great author.

Very entertaining

This was a winding tale of family betrayal, gaslighting, and justice. Perception is a powerful thing... that can be manipulated by those that should be trusted.

A Winding Tale

I love how the story came together at the end. The father was manipulative to the end. People will lie to the end to save themselves.
