About this listen

Be bold. Be brave. Be Viking....

The uplifting, laugh out loud debut novel from the best-selling author of The Year of Living Danishly.

Frazzled mum Alice Ray likes to think she’s on top everything - she has four bags-for-life in the boot of her car for heaven's sake. But after spectacularly embarrassing herself at work, she finally gives in to her sister’s pleas to take a much-needed break. But this is not the luxury spa holiday Alice hoped for - instead, she finds herself in Denmark, in the middle of nowhere, on a ‘How to be a Viking’ getaway.

Can the two sisters finally learn to get along, or will learning to embrace their inner warriors just make them better at fighting? Two sisters. One Scandi holiday they'll never forget...

At first, I was not sure I would like this book. Started slow. As the story progressed, I became more and more engrossed in the story. At the end, this story was well worth the time. It even has some real moments of wisdom. Recommended!

Starts Slow but Worth the Listen

This book grows on you. Couldn’t get into it at first. But it’s a good break from life. Funny

Alice was a bit too whiney for me in the beginning. But, so glad I kept listening!

A good find yourself story!

Love Helen Russell’s writing style. I read Gone Viking after finishing her book a year of living Dainishly. Her wit and cynicism along with the slow evolution of the main character, left this self professed type A personality, feeling hopeful, excited and “hygge”. Definitely recommend both books!

I didn't find this funny or ironic or very interesting. The characters seemed a bit contrived and stereotypical. Kept hoping it world get better but never engaged or developed.

Didn't live up to reviews

I couldn't even finish listening to this. Not up to par with her other books. Wish I had returned it.

Not as good as the others

This book was a true disappointment from A Year Lived Danishly! For sure, if you want to read it, do not get the audio version. The reader of A Year… was excellent to say the least and so was the story. In this book here instead the reader is doing a terrible job making silly voices and ridiculous sounds and it’s a real turn off. I don’t know of any woman talking that way and it makes the whole story very little enjoyable or believable. It took all of my determination to get to the end of it (it does gets a little better toward the end) as I usually don’t leave books unfinished. Not even a three stars, what a pity after I have told anyone I know about A Year Livind Danishly.

Not The Audio Version
