Publisher's summary

When Lenodara the Hawkmaiden - Dara, to her friends - was made an apprentice to the foremost wizard in the world, Minalan the Spellmonger, Magelord of her native land of Sevendor, she thought that the adventurous life was behind her. She looked forward to a long, boring career of learning how to read and taking magic lessons...but Dara’s life as the Spellmonger’s new apprentice is anything but boring!

Within days of assuming her new duties, a goblin invasion in the distant land of Gilmora compels Minalan to gather his forces to repel it...and that means Dara, too. Her unique ability to use the ancient Alka Alon weapon, the Thoughtful Knife, may be the only way to thwart the invasion - and combat the dragons that have ravaged the castles of the land.

But the battlefield is just the beginning of her new adventure, and she finds the aristocracy of the city of Barrowbell is as challenging as a goblin attack. But new adventures lead Dara to new friends in the unlikeliest of places on her way to becoming the Hawklady!

I am a big fan of this author, but I feel this book was too short in length and plot

Different Voice Saps some love for the characters, but great book

Love learning about the Spellmonger adventures through Dara’s maturing eyes - it’s a fun way to re-experience some elements of the same story, which lends credence to the world Mancour has developed. However, as much as I’d love to support Finty Williams - and more female narrators, her voices of male characters seem to lessen them in some way. Rondall and Tindall in particular sound flimsy and much less interesting than when John Lee is narrating the other books.
All in all a great read that flew by - I hope Mancour continues this series for years to come!!

Enthralling!!

I loved this book as much as I did the first! The storyline was always in motion with splinters beginning new, complex stories that all tangled about until it all came together in crescendo at the end. it left me wanting more. So, off I go, to start book 3 and to discover how my little bird grows into a "Lady bird".

a fun alternate view

I'm really enjoying getting the events of the spellmonger books from a different perspective. for example, the feelings that the same battle evoked in me are completely different in this version because it's viewed through a different set of eyes. I hope he does this for more characters, as time goes on

Just a fun book

Once again this adds depth to an already great story. I really enjoyed following the minor characters around on their adventures.

The best fantasy series going keeps expanding.

A worthy successor to the Spellmonger series follows the most interesting of the Spellmongers apprentices. It shows the events of the other books in the series from a different perspective and does so masterfully. The Cadet series so far has lived up to the standard set by the Spellmonger series, which may be the best fantasy series out there right now hands down.
