Wounded hearts

I enjoyed returning to the Beartooth Mountains. This is the third book in the series but I’ve already listened to the fourth book. Whether you started there or are starting here, no worries.

Betsy Wingate is a woman with a dilemma. She’s been married for ten years and believed herself to be happy. She’s made sacrifices, convinced a strong marriage is important. Turns out she’s actually been alone for a while.

Faced with her husband’s infidelity, Betsy retreats to her mother’s cabin in the Beartooth Mountains in Montana. She’s been away from nature too long and takes this opportunity to recommune with nature. She walks, she fishes, she camps and…she encounters a new man.

An auspicious meeting by a waterfall brings Hawk Larson into Betsy’s sphere. She’s sworn off men, but there’s something about Hawk that calls to her. He’s affected her deep in her soul and she realizes he’s bee brought into her life at this time for a reason.

Just as Betsy’s settling into her life in Montana, she’s put in danger and Hawk is there to rescue her. Then, as she’s recovering from that crisis, a tragedy brings her back to Nashville where she has to face her old life and the unfinished business of her marriage. This book does not shy away from tough subjects and I’m glad.

Kathleen Miranti has a unique narration style and I encourage you to listen to the sample. She has odd inflections at the end of sentences but it wasn’t distracting and I soon settled into the story. I enjoyed the story as Hawk and Betsy both had demons and pasts to reconcile. The ending was especially satisfying.
