Publisher's summary

When they hanged mage Baron Homburg and his family for treason, they missed one of his sons. The fourth son, ten-year-old Dale, witnessed the execution of his family, and something inside him broke. Two things happened that day: one, Dale became a borderline sociopath, and two, his mage abilities manifested at almost full strength, especially his wood or forest magic. That night he used his new wood magic to hang the earl who ordered the killing of his family.

Now he has only one thing on his mind, killing all those involved in killing his family or seeing them brought to justice. But he also wants the inheritance of his father’s title and lands. The only person who can give him that is the king, so he must petition the king for restitution.

Before he can petition the king, he finds out that the king plans to kill him. Because if the kingdom finds out who’s responsible for the murder of the Homburg family, the minor nobles and landowners would revolt against the crown screaming for justice. Those guilty are the king’s greatest supporters, which he would have to hang. The king cannot allow that to happen.

Seeing that the nobility is against him, Dale goes into hiding and changes his name to Eric Heartwood. Eric begins killing his enemies rather than negotiating a peaceful settlement. Eric decides that since nobility doesn’t play by the rules or laws, neither will he.

But Eric has a lot to learn about people and their motives. It seems almost everyone will lie, cheat, steal, and even kill to get ahead in the world. So Eric follows suit, killing those who oppose him, until he meets a kindly merchant and his wife. They show him kindness, which tempers his blood lust, but not by much.

Follow mage Eric Heartwood as his powers grow and he is confronted by enemies at every turn. He tries to reconcile what he feels is just and what society says is just. He finds that most times, it’s just easier to kill your enemies.

Symbols on body of protagonist, but why?

The book circumstances are standard for James. It does meander a bit and is messy. Ending seems rushed. Lots of open plot lines, but thats like life..

Narrator Did His Job!

Loved it except for the hero seeming to have no weaknesses. It’s my only complaint is losing any fear that the hero can be injured.

Good Story, but MC is very OP

A really good story with an OP MC from the start. A great story, and good performance. I would listen to a second book if it became available.

Holy Crap that was Good

I really enjoyed this book, the main character was so compelling and awesome. I love it all came together too. The narrator did such a good with character voices and emotions that it was easy listening. Can't wait for a second book, really look forward to it.

Heartwood mage

Excellent if you have an itch for good fantasy with magic; it will scratch and then some. I rate 4.7 -4.8 star. Ya it’s a little short but it’s a James haddock where he really packs a punch. I mean to say the story picks right up. And he puts allot into a short pace while making it entertaining and story flows natural.

I just wish you would write a continuation for Wizards ally

Good Book BUT NOT a New Story.

I really like this Author’s books but he keeps telling the same story just a different way. Instead of writing the same concept over and over I really would like it if he wrote sequels to his existing books. That said I really like this story concept maybe that’s why I keep reading his novels.

A solid Haddock classic

I really enjoyed this book, its got a OP mc thats not too caught up in dumb things like emotions and humanity to get the job done. A really solid plot and runs out well in its 8 hours. Ive always enjoyed James's books. To me their like popcorn flicks where its constant plot with no filler and you dont have to worry about getting bored. His writting has improved a good bit. Truly hope we get another one of these or maybe at least a book 2 of Magicians alley.. lol

Pinnacle of a Haddock Revenge Novel

This is very similar to many of Haddock’s past novels, with the same types of themes and characters. But if you liked his past books, you’ll be all-in on this one.

Our protagonist is an IMMENSELY powerful wood mage, who shows promise with fire magic and water magic. And he’s looking for revenge. Additionally, his success in life seems to attract new enemies at every turn!
