Still good but some weak areas

As with most works by B. V. Larson, David VanDyke and narrated by Mark Boyett I found my purchase well worth it and look forward to others.

The new species encounters was interesting with the sentient rocks being the most so. Also, I enjoyed the authors' decision to divulge Chiara's backstory. It gave meaning to what had been a white elephant plot hole in the past. Breaking out Chiara and Loco into a separate, yet related, story arc was enjoyable and seemed to establish them as a team all their own. I say "seemed" since Loco has a history of similar, erm, couplings in his past so only time and more books will tell how permanent it is.

As I enjoyed Chiara's character development, I would like to learn more about Derek's sister Mara; other than her being a, seemingly, uncaring brainiac type. something more current than her previous backstory early in the series. The authors seem to suggest that there's more to her character than what is revealed and that she has repressed her emotions out of her sense of duty for those she loves around her. Another story arc that revealed her emotional fortitude, weaknesses and internal ethical nuances would be a welcomed inclusion.

With all that said, I did get a sense of the series becoming somewhat predictable and repetitive in a few areas; for example, the scene where Carla lamented to Derek about their not being able to settle down and raise their kids like normal people had been discussed in the past and settled. It would have been okay if it were brought up and either of them would have prefaced it with something like, "I know we've discuss this before but I can't help yearning for a normal life ..." Admittedly, this is a nit but one that seemed out of place.

Also, what about their kids?! We have Loco becoming the stereotypical mostly absent father and Derek and Carla resigned to making theirs pretty much latchkey children. I understand that this series isn't meant to be a family-oriented type of novel but giving the kids some white-space time would help in not thinking less of these leading character parent-types.

Great Military Sci Fi.

I really enjoyed the series thus far. The action, the humor and narrator work great together. I am looking forward to more.

Pushing the limits

This book pushed the series to new thought provoking limits of sci fi and morality. Wish it would keep going, brilliant.

Glad the story isn’t over

Really good ending and content. Precious book had me confused. Getting strong undying mercenary vibes though in this book! Careful not to copyright yourself BV.

One of the best in the series!

Maybe it’s been gone for too long but this series was a welcome distraction to the boredom of isolation. But seriously this was one of the best in the series and look forward to the next.

Great story, characters, and plot

Mark Boyett and B V Larson are a dynamic duo. This book in the series brings a little of the undying mercenaries series tech into it.

I hope B V Larson keeps up the great work, and keeps Mark as his narrator for all his works. I get the warm fuzzies listening to Mark and B V's stories. Outstanding author.
I have never read any of David's works, or how much of this story was written by David, but I will now look for more of his work.

good, lightweight ear candy

follows the formula of the series.
narration is excellent as usual.
I wish B V Larson would try something new though.
always a dimple chinned, man of action, irresistible to women, all of his risky gambits pay off, constantly hurling verbal abuse at his robot/alien genius sidekick it's fun but gets repetitive.
