Publisher's summary

Weaving together memories, recipes, and wild tales of years spent in the kitchen, the acclaimed author of Happy All the Time delivers a beloved cookbook manifesto on the joys of sharing food and entertaining. • With a foreword by Ruth Reichl.

“As much memoir as cookbook and as much about eating as cooking.” —The New York Times Book Review

From the humble hotplate of her one-room apartment to the crowded kitchens of bustling parties, Colwin regales us with tales of meals gone both magnificently well and disastrously wrong. Hilarious, personal, and full of Colwin’s hard-won expertise, Home Cooking will speak to the heart of any amateur cook, professional chef, or food lover.

Critic reviews

“Celebrates a life devoted to food, with chapters on how to cook a meal for several hundred people, how to prepare a gourmet dinner with eggplant in your bathtub, and how to make the best fried chicken in the world.” - Santa Fe New Mexican

“The joy of reading Colwin’s food writing is that she is doing much more than teaching you how to function in front of a stove. . . . Her brusque kitchen style is really a sly way of urging you to trust the strength of your convictions.” - Rachel Syme, The New Yorker

“The one true kitchen friend." - The Washington Post

Awesome stories from someone who appreciates food immensely

I listened to the audiobook but am now going to purchase the actual book so I can look up the recipes. This book is a memoir around food and the discovery of making certain dishes. It’s a slice of life story that is comforting, at times funny and satisfying to listen to. If there were any negative reviews it’s because the reader doesn’t know about or appreciate this type of writing. If you love reading cookbooks for the tales around a particular dish, then this book is for you. The audiobook is well written and well performed.

Finally- a Laurie Colwin reader to LOVE!

I have been a fan of Laurie Colwin’s books for decades but Home Cooking is one of my very favorite books of all time - one I have read multiple time and given as a gift to people I love. Since I have been an audiobook fan I have yearned for a good narration of Home Cooking since it is perfect to listen to in my favorite listening place - my kitchen. Rebecca Lowman is the perfect reader for Laurie Colwin - she totally gets her, reads the text like she wrote it and has a terrific French accent for the few French words in the text as well. What a delight - I was so happy I didn’t even mind paying for a second copy of the same audiobook I already have - what a delightful surprise! I’m sure other Laurie Colwin fans will be very pleased with this excellent narration - very enthusiastic five stars!!!!

Pretentious and Judgmental view of food

I really wanted to like this but found it had very little to offer me. The general tone of the book is very judgmental and dated. She totally lost me with her views of grilling where she describes a grilled steak tasting like 100 cigarettes. I found her views to be incredible pretentious and close minded and had nothing to do with home cooking that comes from a place of love in your heart instead of what you should and shouldn't be doing...
