About this listen
Number one New York Times best seller!
It’s the Salem Witch Trials meets Mean Girls in this New York Times best-selling novel from one of the descendants of Cotton Mather, where the trials of high school start to feel like a modern-day witch hunt for a teen with all the wrong connections to Salem’s past.
Salem, Massachusetts, is the site of the infamous witch trials and the new home of Samantha Mather. Recently transplanted from New York City, Sam and her stepmother are not exactly welcomed with open arms. Sam is the descendant of Cotton Mather, one of the men responsible for those trials - and almost immediately, she becomes the enemy of a group of girls who call themselves the Descendants. And guess who their ancestors were?
If dealing with that weren’t enough, Sam also comes face to face with a real, live (well, technically dead) ghost. A handsome, angry ghost who wants Sam to stop touching his stuff. But soon Sam discovers she is at the center of a centuries-old curse affecting anyone with ties to the trials. Sam must come to terms with the ghost and find a way to work with the Descendants to stop a deadly cycle that has been going on since the first accused witch was hanged. If any town should have learned its lesson, it’s Salem. But history may be about to repeat itself.
“It’s like Mean Girls meets history class in the best possible way.” (Seventeen magazine)
“Mather shines a light on the lessons the Salem Witch Trials can teach us about modern-day bullying - and what we can do about it.” (Bustle)
“Strikes a careful balance of creepy, fun, and thoughtful.” (NPR)
"I am utterly addicted to Mather’s electric debut. It keeps you on the edge of your seat, twisting and turning with ghosts, witches, an ancient curse, and - sigh - romance. It’s beautiful. Haunting. The characters are vivid and real. I. Could. Not. Put. It. Down.” (Jennifer Niven, best-selling author of All the Bright Places)

Story
In the winter of 1692 something terrible and frightening began in Salem Village. It started with several villagers having strange fits, screaming, and unnaturally contorting themselves and ended with almost 200 people in jail and at least 25 dead. Witchcraft accusations - claims that some inhabitants had forsaken God to become servants of the Devil - spread from Salem Village across Massachusetts, ensnaring innocent people from all strata of society under a burden of assumed guilt. One of the most significant and unlikely accusations was against 71-year-old grandmother Rebecca Nurse.

Story
Connie Goodwin is an expert on America’s fractured past with witchcraft. A young, tenure-track professor in Boston, she’s earned career success by studying the history of magic in colonial America - especially women’s home recipes and medicines - and by exposing society's threats against women fluent in those skills. But beyond her studies, Connie harbors a secret: She is the direct descendant of a woman tried as a witch in Salem, an ancestor whose abilities were far more magical than the historical record shows.

When a trip into the forest to collect a rare mushroom goes horribly wrong, I find myself falling through a fairy portal and straight into the arms of the Unseelie Fae prince. The dangerously unhinged and handsome Unseelie Fae prince. What could be more horrible than that? He thinks I'm an assassin sent by the humans to kill him, not a biologist. Determined to kill me first and rid himself of the human he has unwillingly grown obsessed with, yet also needing to entertain his people, the villain challenges me to three deadly trials.

BEST Salem Witch story I have ever read!
This is by far the best Salem Witch story I have ever read. I did not want this book to ever end. I did not want the characters to ever go away. I am having a hard time with my words. I keep tripping over my own feelings. I cannot quite grip the emotions to describe this book.
It is almost like the author was THERE! The book takes place in modern time, but do not let that fool you! There is so much Salem history intertwined in this book that you can also feel the magic in the words. You are consumed by a piece of American history that you may or may not have ever considered before. Author Adriana Mather brought us not only the story of the Salem Witch trials, the history of Salem and all of the people who lived there. Generation after generation. This author captured the importance of never forgetting history, and keeping the lessons alive that we learn. It truly is sad that we never stop repeating history. In the 1600's, it was witch trials. This story makes you think of how today is not much different than it was in the 1600's when the beginning of the trial's started. I just say READ THIS BOOK! I will always love this book. I adore you Adriana! and KUDOS to the narrator. Thank you so much.

Clever story
This story of modern day descendants of the Salem witch trials was clever and entertaining. However, the author (a real life descendant of Cotton Mather...how cool is that?) as narrator was a mistake. The narration was corny at best and, for the most part, irritating. I recognize that this book is intended for a YA audience, but the cartoonish voices and inflection was better suited to nursery rhymes.
