About this listen

Tala is preparing for her elaborate Middle Eastern wedding when she meets Leyla, a young woman who is dating her best friend.

Spirited Tala and shy Leyla could not be more different from each other, but the attraction is immediate. I Can't Think Straight explores the clashes between East and West, conventions and individuality, creating a humorous and tender story of unexpected love and unusual freedoms.

One of my favorite stories.

The movie is very similar to the book, I wish there was a little more detail in the book. However, having Lisa Ray narrate it was a huge plus!

Wonderfully narrated by Lisa Ray. Watched the movie first so this is a great companion to it. Provides more in depth description that some may want!

I Can't Think Straight

I just adore Lisa Ray! And her voice is so seductive! She does a great job in bringing the story to life! I am a fan of the movie and just had to have the audio book once I seen it. I really like how there were differences from the movie and as with most books more of an explanation. I am thankful that Shamim Sarif created this book as well as made it into a movie! I look forward to seeing more books and movies by this author in the future!

Saw movie first

I saw this movie on Netflix years ago. Great movie. I was hoping Lisa Ray narrating the audiobook would mean she’d deliver her lines in the book similar to how she acted the part. She didn’t. Nevertheless, the book allows your mind to fill in more vivd details not present in the film. I would recommend it.

Cute rom-com

A cute rom-com story. I haven’t seen the film but the way the novel is written, I can see how the story would lend itself better to film than it does to the page. The family and societal dynamics reminded me strongly of My Big Fat Greek Wedding and a recent novel, Erotic Stories for Punjabi Widows, though this book is not nearly as fun or well-written as either of those.

The audiobook reader has a lovely voice but makes no effort to differentiate between characters. It is hard to keep track of who is talking or where we are in the narrative, since the reader also neglects to pause at presumed breaks in the text. Some random and cheesy music plays a few times in unusual places (namely chapter 8) and while I think this is an error, it was very distracting from the actual story.

The story itself switches perspectives constantly, and this is where different character voices would have been a godsend. Both main characters have sisters, kind male partners and overbearing mothers, so sometimes I felt extremely confused about who was talking and reacting to what. The story was also rather disjointed and followed a very straightforward rom-com plot.

That said, if you’re looking for a cute rom-com with dramatic family members and a happy ending, this book may be for you!

Excellent

Loved the story and the movie. I loved that Lisa Ray narrated the book. My only complaint is that it sounded like she was chewing gum or had something in her mouth while reading. I tried my best to ignore it, as I otherwise loved her voice and narration. Also, there is a point in the book where music starts playing. It doesn't match the context in the book. Otherwise was excellent.
