About this listen

Tala is preparing for her elaborate Middle Eastern wedding when she meets Leyla, a young woman who is dating her best friend.

Spirited Tala and shy Leyla could not be more different from each other, but the attraction is immediate. I Can't Think Straight explores the clashes between East and West, conventions and individuality, creating a humorous and tender story of unexpected love and unusual freedoms.

The movie is very similar to the book, I wish there was a little more detail in the book. However, having Lisa Ray narrate it was a huge plus!

One of my favorite stories.

Wonderfully narrated by Lisa Ray. Watched the movie first so this is a great companion to it. Provides more in depth description that some may want!

I just adore Lisa Ray! And her voice is so seductive! She does a great job in bringing the story to life! I am a fan of the movie and just had to have the audio book once I seen it. I really like how there were differences from the movie and as with most books more of an explanation. I am thankful that Shamim Sarif created this book as well as made it into a movie! I look forward to seeing more books and movies by this author in the future!

I saw this movie on Netflix years ago. Great movie. I was hoping Lisa Ray narrating the audiobook would mean she’d deliver her lines in the book similar to how she acted the part. She didn’t. Nevertheless, the book allows your mind to fill in more vivd details not present in the film. I would recommend it.

Saw movie first

I saw this movie a few years ago and liked it; hey what gay woman wouldn't like watching Lisa Ray kissing another beautiful woman and Sheetal Sheth it totally stunning. Listening to this book I now understand the movie a little better than I did at the time. Leyla is Indian and though her parents, her mother in particular, aren't enthusiastic about their daughter being gay they are much less over the top than Tala's Jordanian family in their opposition to this relationship. Tala's chain smoking mother comes across as almost a comic book, nighttime soap opera (like our mothers used to watch) villain. While her sister is one of those snarky, dime dropping, back stabbing, doing it for your own good little sneak, and a hypocrite as well; her husband Kareem is a good match for her, neither of them exhibit any integrity in the movie, or the book. This book is the story of Tala struggling to find the courage to be herself and choosing love over family pressure to follow the conventional path.
