Publisher's summary

Two weeks of rest and recuperation - that's what the doctor ordered. Detective Sergeant DC Smith could listen to some music, make some of his own, and maybe even catch up on his reading; he is almost looking forward to it. And then there is a knock on the door. It's only his next-door neighbor, but it is the beginning of a sequence of events that will bring him face to face with some of the darkest episodes and the most dangerous people from his own past. This is Smith's fifth investigation, but this time it's personal.

A MUST READ

The best yet. D.C. Smith faces old ghosts from his past. This book covers 30 years his early years and his recent life. Woven together in a riveting story. As always in DC Smith stories are multi layered stories and the characters are well developed.

Best in the series so far

A really gripping and enjoyable story. As with all of Grainger's books, he sets up the ending perfectly and it's completely satisfying, but more than that, this is the narrative that's been continually set up throughout the rest of the series.

Gildart Jackson is the best. I have to say that in a couple of the other books, he's demonstrated that he's only sort of ok at regional English accents, but I thought he really nailed Irish, of which there's quite a lot in this one.

What a series.

I don’t know how I stumbled on this but now I’ve blown through the first 5 and am about to embark on the 6th. Totally compelling people and writing. Highly recommend.

my fave so far

I love this series. the storylines are realistic and don't follow the same old detective novel blueprint. there is both pathos and humor in each story. DC is a delight, I wish I could sit in a pub and listen to him play, then have a pint with him. this one might be my favorite because it delves into his alluded-to secret military background, and explores the Troubles from both sides of the fight.

Just wonderful

I’ve read many books by Peter Grainger and loved them all. This book may top them all as it reveals much history about DC Smith. But whether you’ve read others in the series, this stands alone and stands out. It’s a mystery, a love story, and a not too distant historical story. Perhaps most of all it captures how complex life can be. Peter Grainger is a beautiful writer who constantly amazes me. I am slowly going back and reading all his works. I’ve never been disappointed.

Remarkable story, new territory for the series

I was surprisingly moved by the Northern Ireland 80’s ‘Troubles’ backstory, and the sensitive exploration of divergent points of view, and the nuanced ways that all the consequences of that painful history resonate into the present. Smith’s persona deepens yet again. As always, excellent characters and great dialogue. Gildert Jackson nails the performance of each and every character. Lots of great Irish accents this time.

Smith Returns to Ireland

Ghosts of Smith's past reappear when he goes to Ireland to resolve the disappearance of young man during "the troubles."
An excellent tale.

Jackson's narration is perfect.
