About this listen

Charles Todd is an English artist who is well known and respected for his renderings of sleek and athletic horses. What he now faces at his cousin Donald's house is also art - the art of a perfectly brutal murderer. Donald's home has been burglarized and his wife, Regina, is lying on her back dead, her face the color of cream. Donald is shattered, shocked, and a prime suspect. And Todd suddenly finds himself involved in a dangerous man-hunt as he searches, against all odds, for an elusive killer and some murderous answers.

Fascinating mystery. Subject is art theft instead of racing, the usual Francis subject. Great danger from international criminals. Very Interesting three main characters. Excellent narration

Dick Francis is a master

I very much enjoyed this performance of one of Dick Francis' classic books. The author always did such a great job of creating interesting (and very diverse!) main characters, with excellent believability in regards to their backgrounds, actions/reactions, speech, etc. - in this case, a professional artist.
The narrator did each of the many characters woven into this story justice as well, giving distinct, consistent performances of each one.
Great job all round!

Classic Francis!

I love Dick Francis and this was one I somehow never read! The story was great, fast moving, and as always, the characters are beloved. I just felt the narrator was dry, spoke without much inflection.

Loved the book! the narrator was very dry, though.

It was an absolutely awful beginning, I cried. I became so invested in the artist and his friend, so I didn’t realize how late it was until my son, Matthew, came to see how I was. I was so engrossed, in the story that when he came in my room, it scared me and I jumped and my heart jumped in my chest! I was sorry to hear the end come up. It was a great story. I learned so much about Australia and the other islands, that now I have to get a book about them all. I really enjoyed the story and the ending was great.

Ralph Cosham does such a super narration! Francis, with his expertise in horses gets you right where you need to be in one of his stories. Even though I ave read all of his books, I love listening and seeing how well I remember what happens in the end!

Great story

The story is fabulous. Lots of twists and turns with interesting bits about art, painting, and Australia.

Charles Todd is an artist with a decent business in painting mostly horses. He is also good at capturing a likeness in sketches. He attended art school. Charles decides to look into his cousin's purchase of a painting in Australia that preceded the murder of his wife and whole house burglary.

The story is very involving, I had to rewind quite often because the narrator speaks very fast and I missed things with all the unusual Australian references. The narrator is very glib and quick, he also cannot do an Australian accent worth a flip. I did find that slowing it to 90% speed in the audible app helped quite a bit (first time I've done that).

Though I enjoyed the listen, I would not recommend this for listening while driving because it takes quite a bit of concentration to follow along.

Fast Talking Narration.
