Publisher's summary

Dick Francis was a jockey and horse trainer for many years. His experience gives his equestrian mysteries an authenticity that has attracted fans around the globe. To honor him, the Mystery Writers of America named Dick Francis a Grand Master for his impeccably crafted contributions to the genre.

Jockey Kit Fielding has been riding the de Brescou’s horses in a succession of triumphs on the race course. But this winning streak is about to end. Kit’s twin sister, Holly, has come to him in desperation. Threatened by financial scandal, she and her husband may lose their training stables. Kit soon finds, though, that a greater danger lurks behind the threat—one that could be fatal.

Very enjoyable.

Great mystery. Very good characters. Loved all the horse moments. Excellent perspective of the horse. A little long and repetitive at times, but not too much.

A horse of course

Dick Frances writes good, clean, horse stories that have a bit of suspense and always include a good mystery. When an untrue social flogging threatens a honest couple with financial ruin the wife's brother, who is a steeplechase rider for the wealthy, gets involved and tries to find out the motive behind this fraud.

Recurring Character - Kit Firlding

Among his earlier works, Dick Francis has two recurring characters, Sid Haley and Kit Fielding. Both are among his best developed characters, and the plots are marginally connected, but all stand well on their own. Break In is the first of two Kit Fielding stories, followed by Bolt. Kit Fielding definitely is neck and neck with Sid Haley among the best of Francis' work. Most enjoyable.

got to love kit fielding!!

Would you listen to Break In again? Why?

yes I would, it had a good plot, a couple suprises, and one or two wonderful scenes--a tender love scene, and a couple "good feeling" ones--about understanding and forgiveness

What other book might you compare Break In to and why?

none other so far, it seemed unique to me

Have you listened to any of Simon Prebble’s other performances before? How does this one compare?

I may have listened to some other performances of his, but I can't remember off hand, but he is one of the memorable narrators I've listened to

Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?

Yes, several, but the two that pop to mind first, is the first time Kit and his lady make love-and the 2nd time was when Kit's brother in law--bobby--almost kills him, but Kit turns his back on Bobby, not wanting to look in his brother in laws face when he takes his life, at the urging of his father, because Kit didn't want to see what Bobby's father would not only do to Bobby's life, but also what he would do to Holly's life--Kit's sister.

Any additional comments?

I've read a few Dick Francis stories(and his son's as well)but this so far is my favorite story, I fell in love with Kit right away, and was amazed at how he could just forgive the injustices done to him in this story. Also, I love the struggle he has with watching what he eats, I think a lot of us go through that, and not all of us come out on top like Kit does. :-)

A Dick Francis Classic

Suspense, surprises, an intricate plot, and the fascinating bond of twins. A delightful story beginning to end.

Really very good!

I was so pleasantly surprised by this book. When I bought it, I didn't have high expectations, but I quickly realized, that I'd found a gem!

The story is great. I suspected the culprit once or twice, but the ending came as a big surprise. But, it wasn't the ending so much, as following our hero's journey as he came to his conclusions that was the best part of this story. His thoughts and deductions were logical and methodical.. It was great fun to tag along with him.

The narrator was excellent. I never had to rewind.. to go over a part again. His timbre and diction were easy to follow and made the book that much more enjoyable.

Yes, I'd recommend this to anyone that enjoys a great mystery and following along with the deductions.

Great Racing Story

I love Dick Francis' books I learn so much about racing from him. Also I'm glad I'm not one of the hero's in his books. They are always getting beat up. He is a clever storyteller and I have enjoyed every book I have read. This one no exception.
