About this listen

Edward Lincoln is a worldwide celebrity who plays impossibly daring detectives on the big screen. But in reality, he is an ordinary man currently stuck in an extraordinary spot. Nerissa, his ailing godmother, had pleaded with him to travel to South Africa to investigate whether someone was tampering with her racehorses. He could not refuse her.

Once there, Lincoln is overwhelmed by autograph hounds and high suspicions. And when sudden perils cross his path and murder makes a horrific appearance, Lincoln, the actor-turned-investigator, is plunged into a plot of gold, greed, and gilded lives. He ultimately realizes that the only way to uncover the killer is to give not only the performance of his life, but a performance to save his life.

Life of a movie star. If you’re a regular DF reader then you know what to expect. Sometimes he regales readers with lots of inside insight into the profession of his protagonist and there’s some here but not overly so. He tends to really detail the desperation scenes. (My only complaint is some inaccuracies in this one but I’m a stickler)

I want to muse here. Just before hearing this, I heard a PG Wodehouse book published only the year before. It’s a wild juxtaposition reflecting the British transition away from colonialism and class structures and unfortunately away from good manners perhaps. If you lived then, remember how wild were the 60’s and 70’s.and consider how very much safer (and egalitarian) life is now.

Francis formula and a slice of 1970’s

Regardless of the years, Dick Francis has never failed to entertain! This particular novel had twists and unexpected events that Howard, the narrator, expressed perfectly!

Such a good listen!

Love, love, love Dick Francis. Couldn’t write a bad book. Read every one of them! Royal reading!!! I have read most of them twice or more!!! Disappointed not to find my fave, “For Kicks” on Audible! My first detective mystery which began a long love affair with his books. Shame, shame! Hopefully that will be corrected!!!!

Great read

An unusual protagonist (actor) and an expected setting (Africa) sprinkled with tension and humor. This is one of my favorite Francis reads!
