About this listen

Twenty years ago, a childhood tragedy drove six friends apart. But when one of them is found dead in the historic, wooded ruins of the New England settlement known as Dogtown, old acquaintances find themselves drawn together.

Now they must work together to solve the meaning behind a message written in blood, a series of attacks, and the mysterious quills that seem to tie them all together. But time is quickly running out.

Indian Summer is a chilling tale of six childhood friends and the things that haunt them - both natural and otherworldly.

It's not bad, just not good. A lot of cliched phrases which get annoying. The story is relatively good. But once we know who the bad "guy" is there is still an hour left of the book. The action for that last hour is simply ridiculous. If you've listened to the Consumed podcast, you will also recognize the Native American themes. Mehnke does not fall into to NA tropes exactly, but there is a strange fascination there. I think the story would have worked better without that thread.

The main characters are sympathetic. The story can get tense with supernatural elements which is good. But it just doesn't hold together well two thirds in. If it's free - take a listen. It is fun enough. Don't spend money though. All of that said. I love Mehnke's podcasts. Maybe this would be better in that format. I have enjoyed Bridgewater and Consumed which probably aren't that different from Indian Summer in terms of narrative. Maybe the audiobook isn't the best way to experience the story.

Love Lore and other podcasts. This is just ok.

First, I would say that I am a huge fan of Aaron Mahnke. I have listen to Lore from the beginning, bought books and have also seen him live. But this book, was not a good book. I have a feeling that the book had promise but was greatly overshadowed by the AWFUL reading ability of the “vocal talent.”

Glad he found podcasting

Book is wonderful, I am a fan of the podcast Lore and this book just topped off my love of this author. It would have been awesome to hear Aaron Mahnke narrate this. Wonderful story with mystery and an air of spookiness. A must read if you like Lore

Wonderful book

Listened to INDIAN SUMMER while driving to Cincinnati, OH. It filled the time perfectly, the characters were well developed, the storyline was fantastic, and the use of the Native American lore was one of my favorite parts.
This book had me on edge the entire time!

Awesome book

Nothing against the narrator, but they were NOT the right choice for this story. I’m left wishing I’d just read this instead of listening to it.

Narration and story at odds.

I love the author but feel like the story line was not as good as the rest of his work .

I love the author but

Ugh! I feel like the story didn’t get interesting until the last two hours!! That’s frustrated me the most. Lots of time spent in the build up. Love his podcasts Lore and saw the reviews for his other books say that it’s a repeat of the podcast so I settled for this. It’s a good story but so much character building and background in the beginning that took forever to get good. Ending was almost anticlimactic - esp knowing all the good stories from Lore - he could’ve done something really spectacular here. Anyways, it wasn’t too bad. Good story for background noise.

Really just need the last two hours.
