About this listen

New kid Jake Garrett seems to have it all figured out. He's a star athlete, he hosts the best parties, and every girl in school wants to date him. But who is Jake Garrett, really? And why has he gone to all the trouble to reinvent himself?

Gordon Korman's brilliant and intense writing and cutting edge dialogue quickly draw listeners into the adolescent struggle of popularity and acceptance.

Would you recommend this book to a friend? Why or why not?

The book is okay. It is high interest and low level reading for high school kids.

How would you have changed the story to make it more enjoyable?

Well, it's a poor redo of The Great Gatsby. I would just have left it alone. The Great Gatsby is iconic American literature. Why dumb it down for teens? If they read the original they're better off.

Who would you have cast as narrator instead of Jim Colby?

I don't know but this reading is rather flat. I generally do a better job myself when reading aloud... more emotion, reading to the punctuation, etc.

Was Jake, Reinvented worth the listening time?

I suppose. I mean, sure, I could have found more productive ways to spend the four hours...

Any additional comments?

I cannot emphasis enough how much better off a person would be just reading the original story, The Great Gatsby. It's the same ideas... but Fitzgerald was just a better writer. Here the characters are so flat, unlovable. These teens are empty shells not real people. Tom and Daisy are just more believable, you can actually feel for them. I found myself rolling my eyes quite a bit with this reinvented story.

Just okay.

This is such a cute book. I love The Great Gatsby more, but this was just fun. The characters are so much like the ones in Gatsby. Rick is Nick … the narrator. Jake is Jay. Todd is Tom. Didi is Daisy. Jennifer is Jordan. Nelson is George. Melissa is Myrtle. And even Dipsy is Owl Eyes.

A high school version of The Great Gatsby.
