Publisher's summary

Hordes of zombies threaten to wipe out all of mankind in this first action-horror story set in the exciting (yet horrifying) world of the Zombicide games.

The zombie apocalypse has driven humanity up into the Adirondacks. Enter Westlake, hardened career criminal on the path of "the Villa", a legendary mafia hideout where he can escape the devastation. When he's ambushed by the undead, an old FBI "friend" and his squad of survivors rescue him . . . and then force him to reveal his secrets. The jokey myth of the Villa suddenly becomes salvation for the settlements scattered around Saranac Lake. Reluctantly, Westlake is saddled with an oddball team to navigate mine fields, trip wires, and flesh-eating zombies at every turn to find their safe haven. Shame there's already someone living there . . .

A professional thief in a zombie apocalypse.

I like the MC, although the story doesn’t stay mainly on him. A thief trying to find the mob guy who didn’t pay him. He runs in to an exFbi agent and together with her an some others head out to the mob guys apocalyptic fallout shelter. Plenty zombies of different varieties…and even a zombi-ologist….Hope there’s another in this series.

Good fun!

If you are coming into this zombie book looking for anything other than sort of pulpy, zombie action you will likely be somewhat dissapointed. Because thats exactly what this author and narrator serve up, and they do a dang good job with it. That said, there is some good writing, and decent characters and character growth in here. Theres some good action scenes, likeable characters and some interesting ideas of how to deal with thing in the ZA. Overall, i quite enjoyed it!

What an absolute letdown

If you're like me and going into this thinking you're getting Danny Ocean in the Apocalypse, let me disabuse you of that notion.

Despite Westlake's 'legend' clearly preceeding him, at no point does he exhibit any of the traits you'd want to see in some legendary thief.

No guile, no cunning, no brilliant schemes, not even a decent plan.

This is despite all the opportunities presented to him to do so. The only reason I finished this book is because i mistakenly kept thinking 'is this gonna be the moment for Westlake to shine?!'

At about 20 minutes left and after an 'epic' fight, I just gave up.

*slight spoiler*

I genuinely wanted to toss my phone out the window when it's revealed Westlake's entire motivation for finding this super secret mob oasis is to collect money he's owed and can't even spend.

Not a single cent more though. Because it's the principal.

Some thief. gtfo.
