About this listen

Ashlock wakes in the courtyard of a demonic sect... as a tree. A tree that eats people.

An odd start to a new life. Almost as strange as the humans flying through the skies on flaming swords and challenging the heavens. After all, this is a world where humans could chase the goal of immortality through the art of cultivation.

But Ashlock is merely a sapling in a desolate courtyard, left alone with his thoughts and unable to speak to those passing him by.

Unless he does something about it...

Every day, he grows stronger as he cultivates and uses a suspicious daily sign-in system that grants him powerful skills, mutations, summons, and items, all in exchange for credits earned from eating flesh and watching the seasons pass by.

But his peaceful life and man-eating ways can only go unnoticed for so long. His Qi-rich bark makes him a target for many young masters. If that isn't bad enough, tensions in the demonic sect are at an all-time high with the Beast Tide festers on the horizon.

Ashlock's only option is to grow faster and stronger than any tree has ever done in the history of the nine realms—all while trying to avoid being turned into firewood.

I glanced over this story more than a few times, not really interested in what seemed to be a boring story that would be about grass growing… and I was right except it wasn’t boring and it wasn’t grass growing but instead a flesh devouring tree that housed a human souls incompatible with its new tree body, outmatched in every way, destined to be slapped down by the heaven and destroyed by others greed, yet somehow persevering in its pursuit of power. I absolutely loved this story, and I’ve never read anything quite like it ever before.

I’m not a very big fan of cultivation stories, yet the angle this one took just baffled me and once I started reading- or rather listening in this case, I couldn’t stop. 21 hours of amazing storytelling, with the ending leaving me ravenous for more. The narrator did amazing, even if I didn’t quite like how some of the internal dialogue tended to switch to a young sounding child at times since it threw me off, but still amazing.

What an amazing yet frustrating perspective

I don’t like all the really exciting constantly moving life or death things. I honestly really like the exciting but like this one how it’s interesting, but not really how it interesting magical but not really life or death every single second I love this book a lot .💓💓💓💓💓💓💓💓💓💓💓💓

This book was very well done. the writing kept on track and didn't go off for very long on random stories\side characters like many books do, which generally just adds confusion to an audiobook. Enough action to keep it interesting, while still giving lots of info without any info dumps like many books do. Really this book is great. the author keeps the names to a minimum while helps so much for an audio book, very easy to keep track of the characters and not forget the side characters. Only real negative thing I can say is I really DISLIKE that The second book is almost half the length, makes me want to stop listening to the series if this is going to continue. The narrator did a very good job, only issue I noticed was that a few times he used a different voices for the MC.

Great audio book, well done. why is the second book almost half the time? awesome first book though.

Even when I tried to explain the story to my wife, she was like really you’re listening to a story about a tree? But in the end, it was a great story and I loved it. Can’t wait for the next. One sucks that it was delayed for 20 more days, but already pre-bought it.

I like the characters and the story overall. Kept me locked in for hours straight. There are a few inconsistencies and the reader/performer makes a few mistakes or will use the wrong voice every now and then. But overall good book.

Good overall
