About this listen

A victim on display. A detective on the rails.

Shopping with her sister, DI Amy Winter is admiring a Valentine’s Day window display of a perfect bride encrusted in diamonds and resplendent in lace - until she notices blood oozing from the mannequin’s mouth.

This is no stunt. A post-mortem reveals the victim was left to die on her macabre throne for all to see. When a second victim is found, it emerges that both women were "Sugar Babes" arranging dates with older men online - and Amy finds herself hunting an accomplished psychopath.

As she tracks down the killer, Amy’s instincts go into overdrive when the charismatic head of the agency behind the display makes no attempt to hide his fascination with her serial-killer parents. What exactly does he want from Amy? With her own world in freefall as her biological mother, Lillian Grimes, appeals her conviction, Amy pushes the boundaries of police procedure when a third "Sugar Babe" disappears...Is she as much at risk as the killer’s victims?

Really good

I thought this was a really good book. The only real complaint that I had was I thought that Amy was annoying sometimes. In this book it’s like she saw sexism everywhere. When a female brought Donovan a cup of coffee she went off on him about just because that was a woman she had to bring you coffee. Somebody complemented her hair and she had to think he wouldn’t complement my hair if I was a man. When her commanding officer gives her orders she hast to question if it’s because she’s a woman even though she had already stepped out of line and defied orders multiple times already. It got very annoying. It just seemed like nothing could be said to her without her throwing the it’s because I’m a woman card into it when it had nothing to do with that. I love this series. That kind of stuff needs to really cool down.

Best Amy Winter Yet!!

This third installment of the DI Amy Winter series is the best so far. The first two books were phenomenal, but this one had me hooked from the first chapter. It was so spellbinding, I finished it in one day.

The narrator was excellent and I am eagerly awaiting for the next book. I hope that one day Lillian finally gets what's coming to her.

Really enjoyed

I’ve listened to books 2&3. I just got #2 on sale; loved it ; HAD to see what happened next. I’m looking forward to Lillian being reincarcerated, hopefully in book 4, Until then I’ll have to backtrack and get book #1.
Excellent writing, good twisty plots, no gratuitous sex scenes, satisfying endings which still leave you wanting more details about the main character’s ability to triumph over trauma.

#abrknpoet reviewed Left For Dead

Left For Dead by Caroline Mitchell is a gripping and fast-paced thriller that follows DI Amy Winter as she hunts down a serial killer who targets young women who use a dating website called Sugar Babes. The killer displays his victims in gruesome and elaborate ways, such as dressing them up as brides and leaving them to bleed out in a shop window. Amy has to deal with not only the pressure of catching the killer, but also the personal turmoil of her biological mother, Lillian Grimes, a notorious serial killer herself, who is appealing her conviction and trying to manipulate Amy into helping her.

The book is the third instalment in the DI Amy Winter series, but it can be read as a standalone. Mitchell does a great job of creating a complex and flawed protagonist who struggles with her dark past and her conflicted feelings towards her adoptive and biological families. Amy is a strong and determined detective who does not shy away from bending the rules or confronting danger. She also has a softer side that shows in her relationship with her sister and her colleague Paddy.

The plot is well-crafted and full of twists and turns that keep the reader guessing until the end. The killer is a cunning and ruthless adversary who always seems to be one step ahead of Amy and the police. The book also explores the themes of family, identity, loyalty, and justice, as Amy has to face some difficult choices and moral dilemmas along the way.

Left For Dead is a highly recommended read for fans of crime fiction, especially those who enjoy strong female leads, serial killer thrillers, and psychological drama. Mitchell delivers a thrilling and satisfying conclusion to the book, while also leaving some room for further development of Amy’s character and story in future books.
